Moving back to AW Series 5

I currently own the 6X Pro Solar, having upgraded from Apple. I also owned countless other Garmin watches, including the F3, F3HR and F5.

I will still keep using my 6X Pro from time to time in case things change for the better. Sadly, in my experience, the HR monitor is simply not up to scratch for daily stress/body battery/calories tracking.

Garmin’s continued silence on the matter means to me that they haven’t been able to fix this as they did try when the outcry began. GPS accuracy has gone downhill for me after the past few GPS software updates.

Hopefully the situation improves for everyone’s sake (unlike the mess of a product called Edge 830, which I owned and sold twice)

  • I just got an AW5 with GPS and cell. I had a friend using the HRM and saw that it seemed good. My TomTom multisport reads my stride rate vs HR most of the time.

Had it on the track this morning. It was bang on for distance. The HR was dead on. I peaked out at 159 in 400M intervals. My resting HR is mid 40's. It's automatically tracking all movements and time standing.

I did the EKG a few times and it looked good. I could send a PDF to my doc buddy,

-->last post on that thread, which is also the most recent; it doesn't take a long time to identify an even bigger trend of users' experience on these boards ;)

Naturally, there is always the good, the bad and the ugly. For a dedicated fitness device, the Fenix 6 Series has way too many weak points in what it is meant to be stellar at.

At least the apple watch excels at being a smart watch, which is its primary function. I use Stryd so distance/pace will be just as accurate with the excellent Stryd app.

  • The 2 massive faults of the AW which makes it far worst than any other sport watch in the market:

    Battery life

    Incompatible with Android

Anything else that the AW does is irrelevant because the 2 reasons above imo.

  • As an Apple user, I couldn't care less about Android. I suppose that, with one being on Android, one has very little else to choose from. To balance that statement, not everyone needs massive battery life. An Apple watch has plenty of battery for the average marathon runner.

Not to mention that, in owning the cellular model, I no longer need to drag my massive phone around.

At any rate, I will be giving the 6X Pro Solar another chance. Garmin is in the process of replacing the device.

  • I no longer need to drag my massive phone around.

unless you forget to daily charge your AW

then you need your phone to track what you do... Slight smile

  • We can go back and forth all you want.
Fact of the matter is, Garmin dropped the HR tracking reliability ball big time.

I hope that a fix is still being worked on.

  • I just got an AW5 with GPS and cell.

I am also tempted by an AW5.  My main exercise these days is indoor biking on a Concept2 BikeErg.  It broadcasts Power and Speed/Cadance over two ANT+ channels - no Bluetooth broadcasting, but it will receive data from a Bluetooth HRM.

In light of this, I need a fitness device that can receive two channels of ANT+ info - PWR and SPD/CAD.

Simple question, but I can't find the info anywhere: Can the AW5 connect to two ANT+ devices during an indoor Bike activity?

    Thanks for your help.

  • I had the Series 4 and I found (because I actually wear 2 watches, fitness/time) that the Garmin watches I wore were in line with the AW from a HR standpoint. I sold the AW because the Garmin watches offer much more functionality that the AW and had considerably better battery life.

A lot of people don’t even wear these watches that measure HR properly their wrist, which is why they get inaccurate readings.

  • I hope Garmin takes HR problems very seriously and in first place for fix. Another month is gone and nothing from Garmin... i will start thinking that problem with HR cant be solved.

  • Coming from AW4, knowing how good HR can be I have to agree on this. The reason I stick with my Fenix 6X is that in combination with STRYD for distance and pace and a polar H10 for heart rate there a a lot of really great features for my swimrun training...
