Fenix 6s Pro - recovery advisor / recovery time very high

I have a Garmin Fenix 6s Pro and have been using the Fenix line since the 3.  Recently (perhaps some time in the last month), it seems the recovery times given by the recovery advisor have increased dramatically, despite my workout routine and intensity staying similar.

It used to be typical to see 24 hours or so for a fairly hard work out and less than that for base training.  Now, I regularly see 3-4 days.  I've checked my max HR, LTH rate, etc and nothing is amiss there.  Has anyone else seen this behavior?

  • you're getting old that's all.

more seriously, i have the opposite. Fenix 3 was giving me 36 to 50 hours recovery times after a long run (but I'm really a bad runner), now it's more like 16-20 hours on the Fenix 6.

  • And you do some yogo and gives you lets say 6hrs recovery. So then you got to keep numbers in your mind... or just keep maxium, 36-50 in your example

  • I also have the opposite problem. All should be set up properly, running hard for 40 minutes (I am a bad runner too!) And gives me 20 hours of recovery even I feed tired :) It used to be more with competitors watch.

  • What type of TEs were and are you getting on those long runs?  To me, a 3-4+ day recovery should only be called for after a hard race level workout.  By that, I mean absolutely pushing yourself as hard as you can / max effort.

  • xpeter88 -- same question -- what type of aerobic and anaerobic TE are you getting when it says 20 hours of recovery?  When you say bad runner, do you mean new to it?  How long have you been running consistently?  Is the distance you cover in 40 minutes increasing over time?

  • Saw that yesterday after install beta 7.77. I too use to have around 20-24 hour. Yesterday it came up with 3,5 day after a Zwift indoor ride. I know i am not young anymore (64), but still training regulary ( 5-7 days a week in Zwift). My training effect on this spesific ride: Anaerob 0,7. Aerob 4,5. Load 210. TSS 80,6. I,ve been training all my life so i am not new to this, but as i said the recovery advisor seems very high now compared to previous firmwares.

  • One of the issues that can occur after a firmware update is that the watch can import incorrect HR and training zones from Garmin Connect. So carefully check your maxHR, FTP and HR zones (including sports-specific zones). And if they are wrong, correct them in Garmin Connect and let them sync to the watch (rather than fixing them on the watch) - otherwise it will just re-import the same incorrect zones.

  • I have already done that , everything ok, no changes.

  • I have checked them as mentioned in my OP.  And my TEs/etc are still similar.  Surprises there are an instant clue to review MHR, zones, etc.

  • As an example, for a base treadmill run recently I had Aerobic 3.3, Anaerobic 0.0, load 120.  This would typically have been less than 24 hour recovery (probably more like 4-12) but I think showed 36.  I can say from real life experience I could (and often) do a similar or harder run the next day.  It's funny, because even Garmin labels this as "base" in the TE area.  It's almost like there was a one-time crazy long recovery time and, since I train nonstop, it just keeps hanging around.

I'm using 6.1.x FW and an HRM-Tri for the majority of my activities.  With winter, I've been doing virtually all my activities indoors and I noticed that my watch's training widget is back to wanting several outdoor runs (with GPS) to establish a baseline.
