DLC or without DLC?

Hi, I am decided to buy Fenix 6, or 6X.

May I choose bezel with DLC or bezel without DLC is enough?

Some people told me, that to scratch DLC or wtithout DLC is the same. So DLC does not have any reason. It is only more expensive

Thanks for your opinions or real experiences

have a nice day

  • Thanks. Titanum is nice, but I hate plastic grey sides combinated with titan.

Thanks for experience. I will buy DLC

Silver Titanium has it own civilian charms, especially with the silver buttons and silver back. :-)

But Diamond Like Coating is spectacular in terms of longevity even on DLC Chinese 60 dollars bands.
You will be happy with it.
The one I had mounted on my Instinct was pristine after 9 months of constant wearing. It is impressive.
Raw "scratch magnet" titanium can be polished easily and got a slight grey patina which is unique.
Also take a look at the new Tactix, it is massively DL Coated too. :-)

  • When I got my DLC 6X about 6 months ago, I was a little worried (mostly because of what I read online) that the DLC would scratch just as easily as without DLC, and that it would look worse when it does scratch, because the scratches would be silver on black.

6 months later, I'm glad I got the DLC version. It has proven to be extremely durable, it does not have a single ding or scratch or scuff, despite repeatedly smashing it into stuff on accident. No less than 50 times, I've hit my watch hard enough against something that I was scared to look at my watch to inspect the damage... but every time so far, there is no damage. None. My watch would pass for "like new" condition if I were selling it; only the strap is showing any wear and tear whatsoever.

  • I had a 5+ DLC for over a year and had a version without DLC earlier, I had the silver Titanium version also.  Now I have Fenix 6 .  The DLC coating is much more resistant to scratches, the DLC watch looked almost like new after a year use.  The none DLC coating (on fenix 5) scratched much easier.

  • I have Fenix 6 saphire with DLC and I got scratch to bezel in first week.

  • same here, I really take care of the watch, yet I have these two small scratches after a month. I would expect the DLC to be more durable..

  • I would expect it to be more durable..

This is titanium. This is some kind of a scratch magnet.
But so easy to erase too. A jeweler pad and they are gone.

For better scratch resistance look for DLC in Garmin but you cannot erase any scratches once they are done.

I wanted a scratch magnet I could fix in a matter of second: silver titanium ! ;-)

    Mine is worn since August.

  • 6X sapphire black DLC got scratched in 2 months after light bump into the table.

  • i also damaged the DLC slightly. I would say it was more of a "chipped". I hit the bezel of the watch on a rock and it took a tiny bit off at the outside edge of the 12 o'clock notch. The DLC coating is relatively thin. It seems more durable than the PVD coating on the 5 but it is not invulnerable by any stretch of the imagination -- and certainly easier to mar than the sapphire display itself. I would say that I'm slightly disappointed but it is not a big deal.

I've never damaged the actual sapphire crystal.

    hi,

here is my Titanium DLC (fenix 6X Solar) with Gorilla Glass DX.

    no scratches till now.

    bought in Sep 1st  2019

I owned before a 5X+ sapphire black, that showed very soon scratches on the bezel.

from my (too) long experience with watches.

    • stainless steel
      • more scratch resistant (e.g. 316L surgical grade has hard surface)
      • scratches can be removed, polished if not coated
      • with proper tools can be made "like new"
      • allergic to some
    • titanium
      • lighter and stronger than steel (in watches this "stronger" means you can make thinner watch cases)
      • non-allergic
      • warm feel when cold outside
      • the surface is soft, so more scratchable
      • develop a Titanium Oxide on the surface
      • scratches can be removed, polished - in time the Oxide is developed back
    • Coatings PVD (black in Garmin) or DLC
      • looks good
      • if the scratch will be deeper than the coating itself, will show the scratches as the shiny steel/titanium will be revealed
      • DLC can be harder than the material itself, make sense especially for titanium
      • DLC provides a better scratch resistance for minor scratches, then the naked material
      • PVD and DLC scratches cannot be "fixed"
    • Gorilla Glass DX used in Garmin
      • outstanding optics
      • not so scratch resistant like Sapphire
    • Sapphire
      • scratch resistant
      • usually not anti-reflex coated, so optically you will see more glare, reflection than Gorilla Glass

so it is a matter of choice, what combination you prefer.

    Garmin offer on 6 series.

    • the more manageable:
      • stainless steel or titanium (naked) with sapphire
    • the more good looking
      • DLC with Gorilla Glass DX

after 5X+ sapphire with black steel, because of the optics, I preferred this time the "good looking" side for 6X

    just me,

    robert

  • Hi,

What kind of material is below of DLC coat? I mean, What is the material of the bezels below a DLC coat?

    Thanks
