Suggestion: Speed and distance calculation from power in Indoor Bike (spinning) activity

I would like to see an addition of calculated speed and distance data fields to be used in the Indoor Bike activity. I use Indoor Bike for spinning classes where the outputs from the bike (Body Bike Smart+) are power and cadence, no speed or distance data. Body Bike have their own app that calculates and displays speed and distance, but it would be convenient to have this natively on the watch. Strava also uses these types of calculations, but in the opposite direction, to calculate power from speed when cycling outdoor with GPS data but without a power meter, see link below.

Hopefully this is something that Garmin can implement in the future. I think it would be useful for many users. Thank you.

  • Hi, something similar is happening in Edge series where there is the possibility to pair and Indoor Trainer with specific functionalities about virtual speed. I will make a test tomorrow with my new Edge 830 and I will confirm you.

But, to be sure that they will implement virtual speed and indoor trainer support to Fenix 6 series I suggest you to send you request here:

    https://www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas/

  • Alright! Interesting if the Edge is capable of calculated speed. In that case I guess it would be pretty straight forward for Garmin to implement it on the Fenix series.

Thank you for the guidance! I'm new to this community. I have posted the idea through the form.

  • I tested today and changing power (ERG mode) did not change speed but if I another mode where I can change the slope it changed the speed. .

So, I also will send my suggestion to support yours!

I am hoping for the same update. I use the fenix 5s plus and the body bike smart +. It seems that you can get one or the other depending on the app you use. Some show cadence, power and distance but can’t connect HR due to ant+ and iOS incompatibility. Seems frustrating the only data output missing from garmin connect activity is distance.

  • This might be an obvious point, but on the indoor bike, you have gone zero distance. You are still sitting in your pain cave in exactly the same spot.

  • Also with indoor bike trainer you are "still sitting in your pain cave in exactly the same spot".

Someone invented virtual speed specifically for this ;)

    body bike smart +.

Had you tried to connect this bike to Zwift?

Bike connects to Zwift via Bluetooth but can’t broadcast hr from garmin to zwift without ant+ adaptor. Can’t win!!

  • Ok, but the speed is calculated in swift?

About broadcast HR you could use virtual run activity without save activity after the train only to send HR from the Garmin to swift. Anyway, I suggest to you to buy a chest strap dual (Bluetooth and ANT+).

  • I am using the trainer road app.... when my indoor training ride is imported into Garmin Connect it calculates speed. Initially, I was pretty excited because I was going pretty fast early on in my Ironman training. However, four month later and an increase of more than 50 watts in my FTP, and my speeds have dropped from over 20mph to 16mph.  That I haven’t actually gone anywhere aside, with all other things being equal, greater watts should = greater speed.  The only thing I can see being used to calculate my speed is my RPMs which have dropped from upwards of 110-115 down to between 90-95.

There are several websites that uses simple calculations (taking into account rider weight, bike weight, headwind, incline, etc) which you would think would be easy to apply...

    pretty disappointed.

  • I agree, it is a simple calculation and Garmin did not implement it also using Bike computer like Edge series :(

The strange thing is that they promoted also virtual event like "Giro d'Italia Virtual" but using bad datas from users!
