Swim Recognition not accurate (confuses free style for ***)

I am not a pro swimmer but on hundreds of swims the Fenix 5x was way more accurate in detecting my free style.  With the 5x I would get an occasional *** stroke detection but with the 6x its every other length is wrongly detected as *** vs the style I swim which is free style.  I would say something changed in the SW for this big stroke detection issue but any guidance as to what may be confusing the watch into thinking I am swimming *** vs free would be appreciated.

  • The only time I’ve had an issue with stroke and length detection, is when I had my 6X Pro Solar on my left wrist whilst I’d forgotten I’d temporarily changed the setting on the watch to Right wrist. Something worth checking?

  • I have the same problem. Besides that the watch does few times in a session register a 100m as a 75m swimm. I dont understand why that is so I might change something. Would be nice to have a possibility in GC to correct that.

  • Punch, thanks! This tool is very handy. I'll use it till Garmin has a similar tools

Currently in my case the Freestyle is most commonly detected as Breaststroke, which is curious, because still cca 1 month ago was it reversively.

  • that is my issue too, i swim freestyle and about half the lengths are detected as breaststroke. This is far worse then the 5x and if anything my swimming improved, at least in terms of pace. If it's not the watch i was hoping some of the swim experts can guide me as to what i need to improve on in order to help distinguish my freestyle. in other words how can i fix this. also, could it be the way i turn? i hope their decision for stroke style is more of an average behavior rather than one instant of movement.

  • It is quite possible than a change was made to the stroke detection algorithm perhaps rolled into ‘general bug fixes etc.’. It’s of little consequence to you but I’ve been swimming with these watches since we could swim with them and can count on one hand the number of times I’ve had my stroke mis-detected. While there might be a problem with the watch the issue usually comes down to the individual’s swimming style.

A couple of sessions with a swim coach might help.

  • I get that, and for me that was the case with the 5x, mostly spot on but even on the 5x after not swimming for a long time I would get more missreads, (ie breaststroke instead of freestyly) but as I continued swimming the watch showed my style much more accurately.  In fact I would use the proper style detection as a sign that my swimming is improving.  The point is that now by swimming is better than its been before (going by pace for a similar effort) but the watch often missreads.  So, in your opinion, what could I try to differently to make more of a distinction that I am swimming freestyle?  I mean the two strokes are very different with what I believe is a much shorter "arm swing" in breaststyle.  My elbow is high and I tried to play with that.  What I am looking for is for someone who understands both styles to provide possibly clues of what can cause the missreads, can you do that?

  • No I can't because I don't know what the pattern of movement that the algorithm is trying to detect. There is a great deal of difference between the two strokes when performed correctly. For whatever reason, what you do seems to be close enough to breastroke detection that it is making it hard for the watch to determine the style.

  • For me stroke detection works good enough (99% correct), however with length detection i am not happy at all. Take a look:

i am sure that making 50 m below 55s is currently not possible for me. In this 2km swim I see at least 4 mistakes. Never stopped in a middle, most cases flip turns. First mistake is, if i can recall correctly, when I was forced to slow down due to different swimmer in line.

Is it normal, or only my watch has that problem.
