Can't connect to Garmin Express any more.

I'm trying to connect my Fenix 6 Pro Sapphire to Garmin Express on my PC to update my maps & copy over some additional mp3 music files.

My Fenix is currently on v6.0 and Garmin Express is on v6.20.0.0 and running on Windows 10.

I connect my Garmin to my Laptop through the USB cable after a few seconds it registers as connected and I can select my watch. On the next screen, I choose Music and a greyed out music screen appears with the pinning icon and the message "This may take a minute". It does this for 2-3 minutes and then disconnects. If I go back to the main screen my watch is now showing as "Not Connected". After a while it reconnects and I can try (and fail) again to manage my music. This used to work 3-4 weeks ago, but now it's consistently failing. I've tried rebooting my PC, restarting the watch, reinstalling Garmin Express and using a different cable with zero success.

I also can't copy files directly to the watch anymore using File Explorer. I can see my Fenix under "This PC" as "fenix 6 Sapphire", but I can't view any of the directories. When I select the watch in File Explorer, it just hangs for 2-3 minutes before it disconnects as before and File Explorer shuts down.

Can't update maps because the top section is permanently trying to Sync.

Anyone know what's going on or have some suggestions to fix it?

When you connect the watch does it ask you if you want to use the media transfer protocol? If it does make sure you select yes to use that protocol. If that's not the problem maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling Garmin Express since it could be that there are drivers or other supporting files on your PC that have gone bad and reinstalling Garmin Express could fix that.

  • Hi I've had the same problem and i fixed it by making a factory reset

  • I am having the same problem.. every time I get the notification "Sync error with Garmin connect"

A complete factory reset? Is that the only solution?

  • I tried reinstalling Garmin Express... but the same errors...

  • Yes that's what it worked for me because i did not mind it. But if you do mind try to just reset the settings, so that your personal files are not deleted from the watch

  • Same problem for me. To solve it, i have removed my device (Fenix 6 pro) from Garmin Express (right click on the device and then Remove it), theni have restarted Garmin express and added my Fenix again. It solves the problem for me.

    Hope this can help you...

Finally got it working. Tried reinstall of Garmin Express. Didn't work. Tried a factory refresh of my watch. Still didn't work. Then uninstalled Garmin Express and then manually deleted everything else left behind, since the uninstall doesn't actually delete everything. Rebooted & reinstalled & and it's now working. It even downloaded and installed the updated Europe topoactive map that used to keep failing on me.
