Is recovery time static?

In other words, once a recovery time is calculated after a given workout, does it countdown only based on the calculation at that moment in time or can it change based on how my resting heart rate, HRV, and whatever other metrics are used to calculate it unfold in the hours/days that follow?

For example, if I see a recovery time of 72 hours after a workout, could that end up being 48 hours (or 96 hours for that matter) based on how my body actually responds?

In my experience it won't go down. It may go up though if you do more workouts, depending on intensity it sometimes adds to the existing recovery time.

One thing to keep in mind is that it takes some time before the algorithm has enough data to reliably estimate recovery need, so it will likely be off when you first start using a watch.

  • I've never seen it go down (other than as normally would happen as time passes), I've only see it go up when I do more activity before the recovery time estimate has hit 0
