Indoor Cycling activity ->Calibrate->get a number but still have too many miles?

so I choose Indoor Cycling, I go down to the Calibration option, it says unclip and then I get a number, 2163 last night as I recall, but when I do the cycling I get 11 miles using Sufferfest but 42 and change via the watch

What am I doing wrong or is this something I just shouldn't expect to get? two results in different places from one sensor and how do I get a different number if that's what is called for?

thanks!

  • And I also wrote to Sufferfest to see if they had any ideas and they basically settled on what I did and what several of you are kindly throwing in: record whatever via the Watch, that achieves the goal (mostly) of getting the effort, VO2 max etc into Garmin and counted and also have Sufferfest go to Strava so I can get decent mileage in there with the runs going there from Garmin

i think I’m good now but will probably continue to tinker from time to time Blush

  • If you depend on your Garmin Connect account for the totality of information I can understand the frustration

Yes it is :( And I think Garmin devices could do something more virtualizating speed and elevation gain accordingly with power to have more realistic data.

Especially now that they bought tacx.

I use my 530 to track my indoor distance on my Tacx Flux, and the numbers seem broadly comparable.

Thanks, I will try! Do you have realistic speed/distance also in ERG mode? If during a fix power training you change gear, what happen at speed?

  • I think it is more reasonable to have your training/simulation software export your training session to Garmin Connect, Strava, Training Peaks etc.. I really don't see it as the job of the trainer to act as an interface between these systems. It is a data source - a machine with sensors - not really designed to interface between systems. You wouldn't expect a power meter or speed sensor on your bike to massage the numbers to suit your software. It is the software that is creating these numbers, not the trainer.

Certainly Zwift can output the simulated ride metrics to Garmin Connect, if desired. No need to use the watch at all, unless you want the other touchy feely data the watch offers. As you will see from my screen print, I already have Zwift outputting the simulation data to three systems, but not to Garmin Connect.

  • And this is Justin again but the logging in to this forum leaves a lot to be desired. Thanks again and I agree with all of this BUT sending the ride from Zwift or Sufferfest does not add onto the orange green and purple bars in Garmin Connect. That’s the gap. The way I am looking at this page as I type I see Simone below understanding and it is mild frustration but I think I will go with an earlier response to push the ride in via the watch with questionable distance but get the bars to update anyway and see how that plays out. I will have another summation in Strava too. Appreciate all of the interest, very active and good forum

  • Yes, and that is why I preserve the data from the watch to feed into my personal analysis and body condition etc. in Garmin Connect, while the simulation data goes off to Strava for a more accurate record of the riding experience.

You could as easily make the complaint that Garmin Connect should process the data imported from other sources in exactly the same way that data direct from the watch would be. But it doesn't happen, so we invent our own workarounds. FWIW I found exactly the same limitation in the Polar ecosystem when I first started training with a V800. Imported fit files simply didn't contribute to training load.

  • This is exactly the point. Garmin now have a complete ecosystem and have to do more!

Is not strange that Swift automatically export to GC and Tacx Training App not?

I would like to train without thinking at workaround and using different systems. If I I have planned an outdoor training with bike and it is raining I would like to have the possibility to do the workout with Tacx apps, Garmin Edge or Garmin watch with the same datas on GC at the end.

Swift, Training Peaks... all are under payment and are not into Garmin ecosystem so I hope Garmin is thinking something more advanced about Tacx and Garmin fusion.

I really don't see it as the job of the trainer to act as an interface between these systems. It is a data source - a machine with sensors - not really designed to interface between systems

I agree, I think that Garmin Devices could add information based on datas provided by the Tacx trainer. But... I did not tested Edge 830 and maybe it already does it.
