F6x Sapphire Screen Protector

I just installed an IQShield screen protector on my F6x. The IQShield is a plastic film with a wet application. The product comes with six protectors and good instructions on how to apply. I was very happy with the IQShield on my old F3, so I thought I would try it on my F6x Sapphire.

I am happy to say that I can't even tell the screen protector is on. I meant to take before and after pictures, but I forgot. Suffice it to say that I would defy anyone without a magnifying glass to even know it was there.

But why? Sapphire is your $100 screen protector. It is like wearing two condoms.

  • For $10, I wanted to see whether I even noticed it (which I don't). And I really don't want another kid, at my age.

  • Same. I don't get the hate for screen protectors. Sapphire is extremely brittle - an IQShield adds a tiny bit of elasticity that could be the difference between shattering and not.

The whole "only diamonds can scratch sapphire" is intellectually dishonest. Silicon-carbide is a common abrasive found everywhere and it'll scratch sapphire. The IQShield will protect against that.

The whole "tin-foil hat" arguments posted later in this thread are ridiculous. As Niterider4 correctly points out, a "tool watch" like a Fenix gets used in a much different environment than a Rolex.

  • Anything that would scratch the sapphire is going to penetrate the screen protector anyways. Seriously, you have to hit sapphire with something extremely sharp and hard, with a lot of force, before it will scratch... and a screen protector is not going to do anything to stop that.

Screen protectors are great for protecting against everyday bumps and rubs against stuff, but those things aren't going to scratch sapphire anyways.

  • I don't get the hate for screen protectors.

It's because sapphire looks extremely nice, it has a high-end, fancy gloss that no other watch lens has. It's the best looking watch lens you can get. The $10 protector doesn't look even remotely as good. That's why you'll never see a Rolex, or a Breitling sapphire watch with a glass protector from eBay on it.

If it doesn't bother you, then that's great, and I somewhat envy people who can use them without noticing. But I think it looks terrible, so I refuse to use them, just like I would refuse to use one if I was rich enough to own a Rolex. Feels like putting a vinyl bra on the front of a Ferrari.

  • I have had a few sapphire watches and, although they are very scratch resistant, they are not scratch-proof. And if we are talking about small scratches, then of course a screen protector is going to provide some protection from that. I would always rather have a slightly smaller scratch.

I don't use my Rolex for mountain biking and rock climbing, so I don't worry about scratches and dings on my Rolex like I worry about them on my F6x. Totally different applications.

And finally, honestly, you cannot see the IQShield on the F6x. To say it looks "terrible" made me laugh, because honestly it doesn't look anything at all. If I could see it at all, I probably wouldn't use it.

My first 6x Sapphire somehow got a scratch half inch long that I have no idea how it happened. I replaced the watch for other issues but that was frustrating. However, I do have to say it is way more scratch resistant than nonsapphire. Scratch resistant, but definitely not scratch proof from my experience.
