vo2max on fenix 6 pro

im owning a Fenix 6 Pro running under the latest Version 5.0. i was already running with GPS for 5-6 times (always more than 10 minutes of course) . The Fenix 6 started to show me in the beginning a VO2MAX value of 51 .. than after the first run moving down to 50 where it is standing right now for the time. i know that 50 is way to high for me - and i believe its wrong. i also saw that you can set a hardcoded value in your profile on your mobile - so i fear that its maybe set hardcoded? is the vo2max calculated always automatically?

  • For the running profile, it should be calculated automatically once you accumulate enough time in zone 2. The trail running profile will not automatically calculate and update VO2Max.

    Probably the biggest contributor to an inaccurate VO2Max is an incorrect HRmax. The algorithm compares your heart (as a % of HRmax) to your pace, so if that is wrong, then so is the VO2Max calculation. The default 220 minus age estimate for HRmax is the average for the population as a whole, but rubbish for predicting HRmax for any one individual. So I'd suggest looking at your HRmax and HR zones before just ignoring VO2Max.

    When ever I get a new Fenix watch (3, 5, 5+ & 6pro) the VO2Max value is always estimated high for my first couple of runs (not trail) and then settles down back to where it should be. I'd wait for at least 3-5 runs and see if it settles. Mine always has.

    In my user profile i have set a HF Max (equals to HR Max) of 189bpm. im 31 years old. When running my avg HR is 152 and max is 168 for e.g. a 6km run with an avg pace of 5:49 (which is a smooth run for me, definetly not on my limit of course). Do i need to perform some runs more on the edge of the limit to get a realistic value?

  • Would suggest that the max heart rate you have set in the watch is too high. There are various guided tests you can do to measure your actual max heart rate, or take it from a recent race where you know you were flat out at the end.
