V02 Max for Walking

Today I did a brisk walk (~13 min/mile) to get my heart above 70% of Max for at least ten minutes.  The V02Max number wasn't updated.  Does the Fenix 6 not generate a V02 Max for walking?

  • I'm told that it does, but my VO2 Max has never changed after recording a walk.

  • Wife and I took a one mile walk last night (I'm starting slow after perineal tendonitis).  Took about 17 mins.  Was surprised to see a V02 Max reported after the activity.  Previous V02 Max would have been from run on 12/3, more than 30 days prior, and when I was injured.

Curious update:  I've had the flu the past few days.  On the 14th (spend mostly laying in bed, I certainly didn't take a 15 minute walk), my V02max updated.  Interestingly, this was just over 30 days since my last run.  I'm guessing it switched to using one of my walks recorded after the run once the run was more than 30 days old?

  • Does VO2 max update after every run if you have met all the requirements? Requirements being:

    • Running activity must be 10 minutes or longer in length
    • Activity must be recorded outdoors with a GPS signal
    • Heart rate data from either a built-in optical heart rate sensor or from a chest strap
    • Heart rate must be elevated to at least 70% of your maximum heart rate for at least 10 minutes continuously

I have been on 3 runs on 27th May, 31st May and 3rd June. Got VO2 max readings after the first two runs, but not after the third even though all the requirements above were met. Interestingly, the first VO2 max reading was 3 days before my 1st run (24th May) and the second reading is on 31st May (a week later). Both VO2 max readings were 49.

I have been told by Garmin Support that you should get a reading after every run so long as the activity satisfies the above criteria.

I've made a post about it here:

Any assistance as to why I didn't get a reading after my last run would be appreciated.

  • My wife did receive a VO2Max Estimate the first three outdoor walks, but then no more. I assume that her fitness level increased that much due to her running training, so that walking does not give a new VO2Max anymore.
