Scratch resistance of Fenix 6X Sapphire

Hi folks!

I have read multiple of chains about the scratch resistance of Fenix 6x sapphire saying that the screen gets scratches really easily and it can't be considered scratch resistant at all. The thing is that these chains have the last post sent few months ago.

I just bought a new 6x sapphire and I started to wonder if I should put a screen protector to it. Do you have any long term experience if the 6x sapphire does need a screen protector or not?

Cheers!

I have a 6X Sapphire now and just got a 6 Sapphire Titanium, the sapphire glass on Garmins has always been ridiculously hard-wearing and I've never scratched it, the glass is also lower than the bezel. Maybe it's because previous 'X' watches were sapphire-only and they are referring to the 6X Pro with mineral glass? You can get a tempered glass protector but that makes it sit proud, worsens contrast and kind of defeats the point.

  • Better buy the solar,  still no scratches here. Just joking, my previous watch was a Sapphire and did not had a single scratch (I'm more worried about the bezel). Don't believe people who are claiming that the screen got scratched without hitting something. It's simply not true, but if you are more comfortable with a screen protector you should do it or at least try it...

  • FWIW (and that's not much to some here) I've had Garmin watches since the FR305 and never felt the need to use a screen protector. I've done a lot of off road running and mountain biking over the years, fallen over and fallen off more times than I care to remember, banged into all sorts of things yet never seen a scratch on the glass. Marked the surrounds yes, but not the glass.

So, it's your call. Your decision.

  • You are far, far more likely to scratch the bezel. Sapphire is the second strongest material known to man so unless you are scratching the screen with another sapphire rock or a diamond, you should be fine.

Banged mine onto a cabinet door which had the key in the lock, sticking out. The key is your typical cheap furniture metal key to keep children out. This put a hairline scratch of about 1,5 cm or half an inch on the crystal, which should not happen. The DLC coated bezel was just dinged lightly, barely noticeable. You can see the scratch on the crystal only against bright light. Day was ruined, but got over it by next morning. Bear in mind that it's a piece of consumer electronics with a warranty of two years. Depending. So investing for a screen protector is like putting a protector to your cellphone, which you are going to replace in two or three years at the latest. You could put the ten bucks which you would spend on a screen protector aside for the next model in line.

Sharp metal objects or sand do the trick. There are different kinds of sapphire, and it's a big slate which is not even recessed, but sits flush with the bezel. It's a big watch which is going to bang onto things sooner or later.

  • My F6x sapphire is still perfect after almost 4 months of daily use and about 40 mountain bike rides. I am pretty careful with the watch and don't recall any significant impacts, but it has definitely come into contact with a few hard surfaces over those 4 months.

Having said all that, I have ordered some IQShield screen protectors ($10), which I found were very good on my F3, just to be on the safe side. If I don't like how they look on the F6x, I will remove them, but I figured I would try them and see. The IQShield protectors (liquid application) were excellent on the F3, and you really couldn't tell they were on if you didn't look extremely closely.

  • I have an APAC version of the 6s Pro Sapphire and touching lots of wood, have had no issues with scratching. I have caught it a few times, and predominant lily use it for swimming and long distance running, but the smaller form-factor means it protrudes slightly less than its larger sibling.

My only issue with using a screen protector would be readability. Having seen some on-line videos comparing sapphire against gorilla glass, the display is more dimmed, so maybe having another layer of plastic would make some of the smaller fonts harder to read?

Thank you everyone for debugging the watch a few months before I get the upgrade! :)

    cheers.

  • I just accidentally slammed my 6X Pro Sapphire into a Brick wall while walking (wasn't paying attention) thought it was going to be scratched/marked up. Not a single mark on the screen or even the Bezel...

  • Scratches only appear when you haven't done anything. Because you did something, there was no scratch.

    Think Schroedinger's cat...
