Bluetooth stability with Android

Hi all and happy new year. Is anyone using the F6 with an Android (specifically Honor 10 in my case) and finding the Bluetooth connection drops after time?

I'm aware that Honor and other Huawei OS' can take some fiddling to allow apps what they need and in my case i have allowed the connect app to do anything it wants so it wont sleep in background, has permissions etc.

Not sure if its down to the phone, F6 or perhaps both but whenever I notice the connection has dropped, I usually need to disable BT on phone and restart connect app (sometimes full restart needed) but if this fails then once or twice I've had to disable and re-enable BT on F6 for it to pick up again.

If anyone has tips on a more stable connection I would really appreciate it

Thanks

  • On Android too, Samsung S9 Plus.
No signal dropping here but huge energy dropping on 5.72... I cut BT often to keep some juice.

  • Huawei phone.

To make sure that the connection doesn't drop I need to keep the app open on background.  Aloowing the app  in the battery management doesn't guarantee a stable connection.

After a while the phone starts to complain about too many Bluetooth connections, just disgard battery message notification.

  • You have to configure the phone, huawei is quite aggressive with background apps.

You have to do this at 2 points

Apps, apps, garmin connect, details of battery consumption, app start and set everything to manual. You can also disable the battery notification for connect there

Apps, apps, three dots at the top right, special rights (translated from German, 3rd point from the top), battery optimization, connect and there "do not allow"

After that the app stays active and the connection is reliable to the watch

  • I have a F6 and 945 and both recently had updates to Bluetooth.  I don't have any problems with a connection, but I noticed the connection range decreased on both by a great deal. In the past, if I were out in my front yard with my phone in the garage, I would still have a connection being 75 feet away. Now, I lose my connection moving 35-40 feet away.

  • I have no signal dropping issues, typically my BT stays locked unless I'm outside the ~10m range from my phone.

However, I am using the new function that put the watch in battery-saver mode during my sleep hours, and often (roughly half the time) when the watch comes out of battery-saver mode in the morning, there is no BT connection, and I have to toggle BT on and off on my phone several times before it finally connects. I believe this to be an issue with the Garmin Connect app, or possibly the android OS on my phone, because I don't need to do anything with my watch to fix it, I only have to turn BT on/off (sometimes 3 or 4 times) on my phone to re-establish the connection.

  • thanks all. i have configured all settings I can find relating to connection (battery optimisation, background usage etc the connect app can do whatever it wants.

I still find that the connection drops after a while. Sometimes an hour other times 5 hours. The re-connection part is still super frustrating.

  • In GCM long press the fenix 6 image and choose upgrade connection.

A new pairing process will start. After this you have an android connection between F6 and GCM and not the Garmin one.

You can also use F6 as a reliable BT beacon and automatically unlock the phone.

I had the same problems since November, Fenix 6pro and Huawei P20.  Have tried everything and no luck, until this weekend, for some unknown reason it is working fine and reconecting, even Live tracking worked fine.  Seems some update came in, not sure, but It is now working.  Hope this lasts!

Just in case I just did this configuration suggested here (never saw this option before):

Apps, apps, three dots at the top right, special rights (translated from German, 3rd point from the top), battery optimization, connect and there "do not allow"

  • thats a cool thing. i always wondered why the watch doesnt show up in the BT menu. i'm just wondering what is the advantage of using the garmin pairing process? to me the android way seems more relaiable

I was wondering what the trick was to get Fenix to show up in Bluetooth devices.  Great info.   Of course I didn't have any drops today after configuring but too early to say. I'll be pretty happy if I can just reconnect from Android vs toggling BT on / off a few times
