Footpod vs. Custom Stride Length

Today I thought I would play around with the "Custom Stride Length" feature of Garmin Connect and the settings on my Fenix 6 Pro Sapphire.  I measured the steps for a couple of 4 mile walks, and came up with a custom stride length of about 1.72 feet. (walking).  I then took a one mile walk without using the footpod, and the distance for the mile was .68, when I know the distance around the mall is around .92 mile.   in Runalyze, the .68 mile walk shows a stride of approx 1.2 feet, but when I change the distance to approximate the true distance around the mall,  Runalyze shows a stride length of 1.6 ft. Closer to the actual, since I do have a knee problem at the moment.

Question is, if I have the footpod configured to be used during the activity "Mall Walk", (custom), is the watch trying to find the footpod, and simply not using the custom stride length as it appears, or am I doing something wrong?  Should I go into settings on the watch, and disable the footpod?  Any ideas concerning the discrepancy?
