Making my own route?

If you're referring to creating and following a course, then Garmin Connect will do this. 

From Garmin Connect main page select Training >> Courses >> Create a course

When finished, select save course. Then if your fenix is connected to your computer and you have Garmin Express installed, you can "Send to Device." Or you can send via Bluetooth from the Garmin Connect phone app.

I do this almost daily, since I'm frequently running in unknown areas. There are also some other sites that provide ways of playing around with courses, such as plotaroute.com (my favorite). Have fun!

Thanks for the information really helpful. Have you changed the mapping on the watch or stuck with the original?

I don't have a fitness device with loaded maps. Maybe some day.
