Fenix 6 tempo problems

Hi people,

I am a garmin fan but i have a allergy for the bands so I was eagerly waiting for the fenix 6 titanium.

I got it since release, well it has been a rollar coaster and i'd like to know if i am the only one.

I found one small topic scratching the surface of my problem but i thought id start my own.

The problem:

My tempo seems to just dissapear a lot... like it tells me i am running 8min/km while i actuallely run around 4:50min/km. And then it it just jumps around. The gps is actually okay (most of the time). I do wait for a good signal everytime!

So i contacted garmin and got a new watch the next day (good service, seriously impressed) and ran with and put a forerunner 235 on the other arm to compare and geuss what. The forerunner 235 had a perfect gps and tempo while the fenix 6 yet again when to 8 min/km for a few times. This is not very handy during running...

So again contacted garmin again got a new watch meaning this is my third watch. After testing for 1 run it happens again (will be testing more). Already contacted garmin who again offered me a new watch of maybe cashback because otherwise i'd be in an unending cirlce (strange thing to say).

I used every gps mode (with te first watch) and ran in different location (happens everytime).

Am i just really unlucky to get 3! Bad watches in a row.

I am seriously doubting that i am doing something wrong, hehe.

Anyway hope to hear some from you guys and serious kudo's to garmins service sending me new watches within two days. Thats just insane service!

Thanks

I am going to respectfully decline your solution, of buying a not very good working watch that costs around a 1000 euro's, being to buy another piece of equipement thats around 220 euro's because the first piece of equipment didn't work good enough.

Thanks for your comment anyway. I believe you have a stryd, hence your comment. How are your experiences with it?

While I'm a Stryd user for a long time and wouldn't run without it, it isn't necessary unless you either like having all the run data or are a bit ocd about pacing and distance.   While it's possible, its unlikely you got 3 bad watches in a row so I'm inclined to think it has to be something else going on.

My Stryd's are ridiculously accurate out of the box and once calibrated specifically for me, well they measure 5k's as 3.1 miles, 50 miles as 50.1 miles.   I can do a 15 mile out and back and end up within a few meters of where I started.   They're that good.

But my running partner occasionally forgets to swap her stryd to the shoes she brings and her GPS with her Fenix 6X is 'close enough' to my values.   Over a recent 15 mile run she was long by .2 miles.   Not unexpected due to how gps works, if it's working 'right' then it's almost always going to be a little long.

Do your GPS tracks look close to reality?  Some left and right side variation is expected but if there's no significant tree cover or buildings next to you or terrain features that might cause signal reflection it should be pretty close.

It is very nice of you to send such a detailed reply.

I live in the north of holland meaning its mostly flat, no buildings and almost no tree's so my gps should be flawless right, hehe. However sometimes the gps is spot, sometimes it is just next to the track, but it is consistent (meaning is next to the track everywhere with the same margens).

I was thinking about stryd, because i am a data junkie. Just love to collect it, even if i dont use it. 'Data hoarder' might ve a better name for it.

The gps sometimes does run from one side of the streed to otherside, but it seems to be that it is had no correlation with my tempo. Tempo just stops for some points (it lowers to 8min/km) and then it goed back to my normal pace. Average 1km pace is actually closer then expected if you see my pace. I just get angry when I see 9km/u real time speed evergtime i look when i am pushing myself. Thats why i got so annoyed.

While stryd might be a solution i do want it to work properly with GPS. It an expensive watch meaning i can expect some quality.

    You might have some advice.

What do you think about the new stryd with the wind detection. I heard some troubling things about it when it caught some water (power levels would rise significantly).

    Thanks for the reply

  • The tempo isn't reliable indeed. I don't think it's a hardware problem. I checked mine, it's also changing too much to be useful. Welcome to the wonderful of Garmin, where quality control is second, and new features and data are first. Since we are still buying the products because the competition can't match some of the functionalities, Garmin will probably not care about the x% of unhappy customers...

Let's say that it's the compromise to accept with this brand.

You can buy a footpod from another brand also. Less expensive than Stryd, less precise, but still more than the watch if your tempo is critical.
