Pool swim is not accurate

I have been using the 6pro to tack my swims

and constantly getting incorrect measurements.
I swim in a 50m pool for every 1km or 20 laps it records 22 laps and 1100m

Over 1km it completely starts to lose it and starts to add laps randomly

it’s even worse in a 25m pool

what can be done to calibrate for accurate measurements

  • This occurred today over a 3000m swim (60 laps).  I did a planned swim circuit.  This included 50m sprints and some 100m sprints.  Half of my 50m sprints were logged as 100m.  total Garmin recorded was 3350, when it was only 3000m. All turns tumble turns.  Using Fenix 6 Pro

  • I also have a problem with pool swim. My watch doesn't register any lenght or stroke at all when doing *** swim. Had a answer from Garmin support today, they are investigating this problem ( yours) and tell it's related to charging the watch with a pc/mac device. Workaround is to reset 5he wath, pressing the light button for 30 seconds regarding to the email. And use a wall outlet or USB adapter for charge.

It's obviousely more problems that that, i have never charged the watch with other device than a Samsung wall adapter or a powerbank. Have sent them a answer so hope they can fix it.

Edit *****swim was supposed to be breaststroke , obviousely they cencors their own concepts on this forum. Funny.

  • Surely the problem is not PC charging.  You need to use the PC/MAC for access to Garmin Express!  I have just moved from a Fenix 6 to the 6 Pro.  The Fenix 6 had no problems.  This is second swim with 6 Pro.  First ok, this one today not so.  The tracking of my planned circuit was accurate on the watch, less the last leg when it vibrated for my last lap, when in fact it was my second last.  Then vibrated again on the actual last lap.  Then when I finished it said 3350m!

  • 100% agreed. Here is the answer . By the way i also have the 6 pro.

    Hello Jan,

Garmin has become aware of and investigating an issue with Pool Swims not recording distance during an activity. Garmin has discovered that this only occurs when charging through a PC/Mac device and device is unplugged and unfortunately, have not been able to determine the root cause. We have had reports that this will appear resolved for a few days after the watch has been reset, but then will occur again after device is charged.

Steps for work-around: reset the watch by pressing and holding the light button for ~30 seconds until the device powers off after unplugging from a PC/Mac and then restart device. To avoid needing to do this, charge with a wall outlet or USB Adapter instead.

Thank you for your patience while we investigate this issue.

    Thank you for choosing Garmin,

    Grace

  • 2 different issues -

    1) lack of data recorded.

    2) data is incorrect.

    Answers:

    1) Garmin is looking into.

    2) This is down to style. if under it is usually down to turns/push off not being strong enough (I occasionally have this especially when I get tired). If over again its normally when you get tired and or pushing it and your style gets sloppy. I think that at this point the watch thinks you have made a turn and records another lap. As distance is based on number of laps if lap count wrong, distance is wrong. But easy enough to go into the activity (post activity) in connect / web and to adjust the number of laps which fixes the distance (doesn't help the lap detail - but super easy to see on the web where there is  a missed/added lap as you can explode to see individual laps and added/missed stand out due to time/pace issues.

  • Thanks for above.  Adding this incase someone from Garmin reads it.

There was ONE occasion I got a cramp, stopped momentarily then continued - this registered as an additional lap.  Can understand reason.

However.  On 6 of 10 x 50m sprints the watch recorded an additional lap between 14-17secs into each of those 6 laps.  There was no change of stroke or noticeable speed, nor interrupted in any way.

    See below at 2.1, 3,1, 4.1, 6.1, 7.1, 8.1

I will reset after next charge and before next swim and see if that rectifies the issue

  • Couldn't expect anything else from you. Sure we can not all have your technique, but recreational *** swim should be possible to detect. No stopping, no banging. But i guess that all who suddenly experiencing this just have to accept that their technique has changed.

  • Normally i don't get tired of recreational chest swim on my rest days. And the distance show 0 meter( Zero).

  • @Jano22222

sorry - am confused as to what is

    recreational chest swim

How do you finish a lap and start a new lap of the pool?

It sounds to me like you may be swimming in very easily, maybe barely touch the side of the pool and then sort of glide off again, and or turn around and slowly swim off? If that is the case, then yes your watch will struggle to determine laps and if no laps are determined, then yes you will get 0 as distance, as distance is number of laps x pool size (i.e. lap distance).

Please also note that if you swim too slowly the watch may also not record distance as accelerometers and gyroscopes are tuned to start from a specific pace:  https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=dI6SNTOnab5mYmijVcgUo8#:~:text=The%20swim%20detection%20software%20on,in%20no%20distance%20being%20recorded.

Note that post activity in connect app/web you can edit the pool size and the number of laps - so you can correct overall distance. It will not correct individual laps, but at least your distance will be correct.
