Alternate activity to use for Skiing while we wait for Garmin to fix the problem

I'll be going skiing in Switzerland later this week. For me, this is a once in a lifetime experience, and I really do not want to be frustrated by constant watch crashes. I had been hoping Garmin would address the issue before my trip, but that seems unlikely at this point.

I want to try to come up with some other sort of activity I can use instead of the Skiing app, that might do a lot of the same stuff. So far, the only thing I can think of is to use the Track Me activity. What other data screens or fields can I add to it to make it better for skiing? (I know I'd be missing the automatic starting/stopping of ski runs, but frankly those aren't working even in the Ski activity either, so...)

  • The Snowboard activity is defective  too? Can anyone confirm this? If it is not defective, it could be used alternative to ski activity. Later, after saving the activity, it can be changed to ski activity in Garmin Connect.

  • Perhaps I am wrong.  I've not used the skiing and snowboard app.  But the apps are really just a customized set of data screen for the most part are they not?

Trail run vs Run vs Walk vs Hike  <==  different data screens, but nothing would stop you from customizing the run to look just like the Trail run.

that said.  for skiing/snowboard you would have some data screen similar to "laps" that would reflect individual "laps" to represent the runs.
the data screen are undoubtedly available if you just look for them.   So whats my point.    What part of the  skiiing app causes the crash,  is this known?

Otherwise, what data  are you really interested in?   You could just use a run or bike app for that matter, and add in an assortment of elevation screens. and just hit the "lap" button at the end of each run.

It might not be displayed as pretty in garmin connect.  Or perhaps it will, since you can change the activity types.

just a idea (obviously not IDEAL, but maybe its workable)

  • Has somebody already tried a 3 party ski app from the Garmin iq store? If this fails too; Garmin seems to have a seroius software or/and hw problem. I really hope it is a software prob an fixed asap.  Ski season is upon us.

Garmin doesn't make the ski/snowboard "current run" and "all runs" datafields available to use in any activity that isn't a downhill snowsport, as far as I know. I haven't used the ski activity yet so I'm not sure what other information and functions might be missing If I use a different app than ski/snowboard. I think it lets you review each run's data seperately later, as opposed to "splits" like you'd get when you use the lap button, where the only unique data you'd get for each run would be pace, time, and distance, but no info about elevation or anything.

I'm fairly certain that's the feature which is causing the app to crash for most people. Most people have reported that the first run recorded fine, and then the watch crashed when starting the second run.

So ya, I think you might be correct that I could perhaps mimic that function by using the lap button instead, and just making just to click the button at the top and bottom of each chairlift ride. Only downside is that every other lap would be logging the chairlift ride, which I'm not really interested in... but I suppose it's better than nothing.

I'd like to know this, too. I may download one or two before my trip to try out, but unfortunately I can't really try them until I'm actually at the resort.

As a last resort, in case the native Ski activty and CIQ skiing apps fail, I'll build some sort of custom activity to use. It'll be able to log calories, elevation profile, the gps track, HR, etc... all that'll be missing, I think, is the breakdown that Connect gives you later for each individual run.

I thought about this some more, and I think that if I pause the activity during each chairlift ride, then I only need to press Lap one time at either the bottom or top of each chairlift ride, and hopefully each lap would only contain the data from the downhill run.

Or it might make things even worse if I pause at the bottom and resume at the top, it might think I teleported at 12,000mph and really mess with my average speed Smiley

I just finished making my skiing activity, here's what I did:

"Alt. Ski" (started with a copy of the "Track Me" activity)

    Datascreen 1 (misc. data)

    1. Elevation
    2. Min. Elevation
    3. Max. Elevation
    4. Calories
    5. Training effect gauge
    6. Battery level
    7. Temperature (from Tempe sensor)
    8. Time of day

    Datascreen 2 (current run)

    1. Laps (total number of laps recorded so far)
    2. Lap time
    3. Speed (realtime)
    4. Lap distance
    5. Lap speed
    6. Lap descent

Datascreen 3 (run totals so far)

    1. Laps (total number of laps recorded so far)
    2. Timer (total time for all laps)
    3. Avg speed (of all laps)
    4. Distance (total for all laps)
    5. Maximum speed
    6. Total descent

    Datascreen 4

    1. Map
  • Have you tested it?   again.  its a work around.  sucky you need to.  but in a pinch, why not.  ENJOY the skiing.  not the lack of fully functioning tech while your out in beautiful nature :)

  • Not yet, besides just running it for a few minutes in my front yard. Won't be hitting those Swiss slopes for a few more days, I'm still at home in California at the moment.

You have a good point about enjoying it and not worrying about the tech. That's my thought - I'll try the ski activity, if that fails I'll try my backup activity, and if that fails then I'll just bring up the Map app or just not use the watch at all, and regardless of what I use or don't use, just enjoy the skiing regardless. Thanks!
