Garmin Pay is now available in my country and with my bank. Who is using it ? What is your experience ?

I have noticed this morning after a random check that my bank and the card I use were available for Garmin Pay.

This summer on my Samsung Galaxy Watch 46mm, Samsung Pay was working, let say, 50% of the time.

Now about Garmin Pay ? I'm looking forward to using it. But is it reliable for you ? What is your experience about it ?

I'll post mine here.

  • You can open a Starling account easily. Isn't that enough to use Garmin Pay?

  • Yep I have a Starling Business account so can use my watch for work purchases. My personal account is with First Direct and they have ‘no plans’ to add Garmin Pay unfortunately. I also asked Curve and they say its in the works but no ETA yet. Curve is great as its like a front end to all your cards and after making a payment you choose which actual account is goes to. Once Curve is supported every one of my cards will be :)

  • My experience so far.

I have used twice Garmin Pay yesterday.

Compared to Samsung Pay on my previous Galaxy Watch, the F6 was more reactive. I was not obliged to get in contact with the terminal for the transaction to work. My Samsung bezel used to be bang against terminal for sometimes transaction failure.

About the pin code: it has been asked only once. The second payment has been triggered by Wallet shortcut but no pin code asked.
I have chosen a simple pin code for that purpose and it was easy to pin it.

I have made the second transaction after my own card "no contact" transaction failed. Garmin Pay succeed.

So far so good as I use to have 50% rejected transaction with the Samsung.
The Fenix has vibrated strongly just as I was approaching the bezel from the Terminal and everything was OK.
So I'm happy with it as it was fast and reliable.
BTW I'm on the last Beta...

  • It's designed such that you need to enter your pin once per 24hr or after a period of non-detected HR. If you need to enter the pin each time, then you might need to wear the watch a bit tighter

  • I've had cards loaded into my Garmin Pay wallet for about 18 months now, I've still never tried using it.

I mostly have it for a backup in case I forget my wallet, or if my plastic card isn't reading for some reason. I keep meaning to try it so I can at least see how it works, but I keep forgetting. Old habits die hard.

  • Garmin Pay is probably the feature I used the most on my watch (which is both amazing, and kind of sad... I'm quite unfit at the moment!)

I have very few rejection issues with it and I use it 2-3 times a day. In fact the rejections are so rare that I'm caught off guard whenever it happens because I can literally go weeks without having to use my wallet and often don't even carry it on me!

You're supposed to only enter your pin in once in a 24 hour period if you are wearing your watch continuously (if you take it off to shower etc then it'll reset). Having said that - I'm finding I have to enter my pin on the F6 more regularly than I did my F5+ but perhaps I'm not wearing it tightly enough?

Still - it's far more convenient than using a card or even a phone to pay with.

  • Garmin Pay was one of the reasons for upgrading from F3. I've been a Samsung (phone) with Samsung Pay for 4 years but always struggles with Samsung Pay, for some reason and I never found it convenient.
Garmin Pay on the other hand always works and I find it very easy to use. Advantages compared to Samsung Pay:

NFC Connection with POS always works, never had any issues.
As long as I wear my watch (OHR turned on) I only need to enter PIN once a day.
It's fast and easy to start (long press light button and select Wallet).
No PIN needed on the POS since (same as for Samsung Pay).

The only problems I've experienced are bugs with GCM which in the beginning made it impossible to add cards to the wallet and at one time deleted the cards from wallet and removed the wallet from watch.
