Problems with getting GPS fix on 6X Sapp

Trying to troubleshoot a problem that I can across the other day.  I put a request for advice, but sadly got none.  The more I'm observing this behaviour the more I'm thinking it maybe hardware related.

Following getting home for a run yesterday,  I tried to get a GPS lock and was surprised I got nothing.  A quarter red arch which didn't progress.  I soft reset the device and tried again, before this, synced the device via GCM.   Again, in the garden full view of the sky, nothing. Changed GPS and Glonass to GPS And Galileo, again, nothing.  This was with Power setting extended.   Power saver was off or in normal.

I left the watch outside for 40 minutes, nothing again. So at this point I completed reset default settings.  Some time later, tried again through all GPS settings. Nothing.  At that point was going to call Garmin today.

Came back from work, syncd the watch Garmin express and updated the Topo maps that were available.  Probably worth noting, I'm on the latest firmware 4.30 and 2.60 and GPS 2.50, so no updates were offered.

I took the watch outside and selected the run activity and again waited, this time it appeared to lock on and within 20 seconds or so, green!!  At this point I was thinking, I wonder if the watch would benefit from GPS saturation. I'm not 100% understanding of this, however, a few people have suggested.  So I cancelled the activity and placed the watch in full view of the sky and left it again on the run activity.  I returned back to it to find, the GPs once again had not locked on and quarter red again!  I rebooted the watch and tried again, no luck!!!

What are people's thoughts on this odd behaviour on the Fenix 6x Sapp?

Thanks

  • Firstly, go to Systems, About and scroll all the way to the end. Do you have CPE Current?

If not you need to find out why it is not being updated. That file preloads satellite positions that help get the initial fix quickly. It should be updated when you connect to phone to GE.

If you can, connect your watch to a computer and have a look in the GARMIN folder for the file CPE.bin. Can't remember for sure now but I think it usually sits in the REMOTESW folder. If it's there, delete it. Close the folder and sync with Garmin Express. The have a look again and see if a CPE.bin file is there. Then try to get a GPS fix outside as before.

Worth a call to Garmin Support too as it is possible there is a problem. But you just know they ar going to suggest a reset to factory settings first.

BTW, the Power Save Timeout just extends the time before the watch goes back to the Watch Face when you are in an activity so won't have any effect other than allowing you to leave the watch in the open with an activity chosen for 25 mins instead of 5.

  • Thanks for the speedy response, Philip!

Yep, the CPE is current.  Just going to have a go finding the file now.

    Thank you

  • Hi Philip

Followed everything you suggested.  Cpe removed and resyncd via Garmin Express.  CpE back to current. Sadly, no joy! Damn thing stays within the red, doesn't even progress

  • Seems like there may be a problem with the watch, I'd contact Garmin directly about this. My watch gets a GPS lock within 20 seconds even when I'm indoors in the bottom floor of a 2-story building nowhere near a window. Usually locks in 5-10 seconds if I have a view of the sky. So if it's not getting a lock within 20 seconds, even with a view of the sky, something weird is going on.

  • Yeah, I'm inclined to agree.  Seems strange this has started to happen.  Only had it a couple of weeks, was working perfectly well a few days ago.  It not be dropped, banged or anything.

I'll speak to them first thing and get it exchanged.

I'm doing a last reset, this time the full activities too.  Can't see it working though

  • Well that's interesting!! Completed a full hard reset and got rid of all activites etc.

Installed everything back. Ensured GPS and Glonass is selected for run activity and put the watch out in the garden.  Left it there in full view of sky for 30 mins. Nothing, still not recieving.   Out of interest, I disabled talky toaster maps and gave it a couple of flicks on the back case and blow around the ports and alt/baro sensors.  Put it out again, with 20 seconds, it's turned green!!?

I'm still inclined to agree it's defective. Surely, the watch will have no problems with maps and GPS sensor? Or is it the flicking and blowing around the ports?

    Very weird, like you say

  • Spoke too soon, it's gone off again!  Garmin tomorrow amFace palm♂️

  • Nothing you've done should have impacted on the GPS connection. Sadly, I think you might have a defective watch.

  • Looks like that! Bummer!! Hate faffing about returning items .Probably be 2 weeks before I get a new one! Oh well

  • Depends on the support centre. Some of them are pretty good and will ship a replacement before returning the other one. Have you contacted the reseller? Sometimes they are a little more responsive especially if close by.
