How do I manually update firmware through Garmin Connect phone app with automatic updates turned off?

I have iPhone and I’d like to be able to check for firmware updates manually and elect to update when I want. Is there a way to do that or is the Automatic Updates setting required to get any updates? I’d prefer to use Garmin Connect and not have to connect my watch to a PC. Thanks!

With auto update turned off I don't believe there is a way to push the update from the phone. It may transfer if you do a wifi sync but if you want full control over when an update happens using Garmin Express on a PC or Mac is your best choice.

  • You can also see if your watch has any downloaded (but not yet installed) pending updates by going to the system settings in the watch, and you can manually start the update from there. Just figured that one out the other day.

  • With the phone?  Nope.  Otherwise just connect to the PC and launch Garmin express.   Walk away for 5 minutes.  Come back and if the watch is showing live in Garmin Express, the upload of the new firmware and other software is done.  Garmin Express doesn't care if you have updates on or off, when you connect to the PC, you are getting them.  When you disconnect your watch, it will boot and ask to install updates.  If you DO NOT want to install them,  Press and hold the back button (Bottom Right) till the clock appears.

To prevent updating (so you can stay on 3.00 like me, or another version).  Before you disconnect your watch, open explorer and in the GARMIN folder, delete the GUPDATE (it will be in all caps) file.  Then browse to the Garmin/RemoteSW folder and delete everything in that.  You can then disconnect your watch.
