Running Dynamics Pod or Foot Pod?

Witch one should i get? I wan't better statistics form my runs.

will both of the devices give better accuracy on a threadmill?

the price of both devices is the same

  • These are two different devices for different purposes. I use both, actually.

Footpod gives more accurate instant pace and is most usefull when running indoors.

The RD pod does not give pace, but gives running dynamics, like ground contact time or vertical oscillation. Additionally the RD pod gives you the ability to use Garmin's Running Power on your watch - something the footpod alone does not provide.

  • If you don't have a chest HR strap I would recommend that you buy a HRM-Run that includes the Running Dynamics statistics. A reliable HR is probably one of the most valuable info you can get.

If you go for a foot pod I would recommend a Stryd which will give you some interesting info like power and it is probably the most reliable foot pod available.

I would prioritize in this order: HRM with RD, RD pod, Stryd, Garmin Foot Pod.

    Best regards,
    Tobias

  • HRM Run strap and footpod.

Get more stats than the RD Pod and you get very accurate HR readings compared to wrist HR. Also works with breathing metrics which is useful when controlling your breathing.

  • Can you use a RD Pod/HRM Pro and the Footpod (Garmin or Stryd) along with your watch for superior running dynamic metrics?

  • Yes you can use an HRM-Pro and a foot pod together. The HRM-Pro will provide all the running dynamics metrics. The foot pod doesn't do running dynamics, but it will give you more accurate speed (pace) and distance especially when running indoors or where you can't get a strong GNSS signal.

  • Can you use a RD Pod/HRM Pro and the Footpod (Garmin or Stryd) along with your watch for superior running dynamic metrics?

Yes you can, I use a HRM-Pro together with a Stryd but not to get better running dynamics but to get more accurate pace, distance and running power. The problem is that when you compare the same type of metrics between Stryd and HRM-Pro you will find that although they are aligned there are differences and you simply need to choose which of them to trust. As an example, compare the cadence:

  • I use an RD Pod (for running dynamics), a foot pod (excellent for quick pace updates) and a HRM-Tri (only used for heart rate). The RD Pod overrides the running dynamics from the HRM-Tri, and the foot pod overrides both for cadence. It may be a strangely redundant combination, but it works perfectly fine.

The RD measurements from the RD pod differ from those from chest HR straps that provide RD, so if you have both, don't forget to take the RD pod, or you'll have suddenly higher ground contact for example.

There is one exception, only if you use HRM-Tri+RD Pod+Foot pod+beta software 20.87: in the activity summary on the watch, the average step length can be incorrect or missing. You won't notice that if you view the activity in Connect.
