Steps within the activity

Hi Folks,

My wife has an Vivoactive 3 and one thing I notice is when she is on walk activity - there is a fileld of steps taken.

Is there any way to have it on Fenix 6 Pro? I am which will be also visible at Garmin connect etc..

Its like you have walked 8 Km and took 9423 steps... something like that I keen to see

Cheers

  • Same datafield I was going to recommend, it's a good one because it also saves the number of steps to the activity file for later viewing.

There's another one called Steps Carousel, which is also neat because it rotates between showing total steps for the day, steps for the activity, etc. But it doesn't save steps to the activity file.

I've been using Steps to Fit for the last few weeks, with great results.

  • I was looking for that data field also, but could not find it. Really surprised that Garmin does not have that as an option for an activity, should be an easy thing to deploy. @Garmin; why is that data field not available?

  • Came here to say the same thing. My wife has a VA3, I've got the F5+. She can track steps during a walk, I can't.

  • I had a VA3, the native activities did not have a steps datafield. Perhaps your wife is using a CIQ activity and/or CIQ datafield that displays her steps. You can do that on your F5+, too.

Anyways, Steps Carousel works great for me, it shows you your activity steps and daily steps, switching between the 2 every couple seconds.

In the time since I wrote my recommendation above (6 months ago), Steps to Fit had caused serious issues on my watch and I had to uninstall it. So I don't use that one anymore, and don't personally recommend it (although it may work fine for other people).

If you don't want to go with a CIQ datafield, you can always press+hold the Back button to return to the watchface, and view your steps there. Then press the Top-Right button to return to your activity.

  • I use this datafield for counting steps during a walk Dozen Walk

  • Thanks for the response C.sco. I just checked my wife's VA3, and the second screen on 'walk' activity (i.e. the first one you get to when swiping up) shows steps and calories. She doesn't use CIQ and has in all probability never looked at an activity other than on the device itself - it's little more than a watch to her. Maybe a different firmware to the one you had?

Regardless, can you provide a little more info about the serious issues you had with Steps to Fit? I'm one of those people who will only install aftermarket software on anything if there's truly no native support and if there's a solid need for it. The only way I've found of tracking activity steps on my F5+ is to take a photo of the daily steps screen before and after the activity, and work out the difference manually.

So please give me a heads-up on what to watch out for with Steps to Fit, and, if you don't mind, a comparison between Steps to Fit and a CIQ app. Might sound like a silly question but I'm not that well informed since my needs are mostly served by whatever comes installed as standard.

  • Steps to Fit was causing my watch to crash and reset every time I started an activity, and in fact got stuck in and endless loop of crashing and resetting and I had to do a factory reset on my watch.

Not sure if it was caused by a bug in the Steps to Fit datafield, or a bug in the Garmin firmware I was using at the time, or a combination of both - all I know is I had no problems before installing it, tons of issues after installing it, and no problems since doing the factory reset and using Steps Carousel instead of Steps to Fit.

  • Gotcha, thanks for elaborating. I'll keep an eye out for this kind of behaviour, although all I've noticed so far is that Garmin Connect doesn't always show S2F data, even if it's there.

If you notice anything odd like this in future, please consider reporting the bug to the developer. Small, independent devs care about bugs and will appreciate the feedback, as opposed to just ignoring it like Garmin does.
