Lap Pace only shows +/- ten second (occasionally five) prediction.

I have had a number of Garmin Watches and with all of them (even the Fenix 3) I was able to reliably run even spits, using the projected lap pace.  Unfortunately, my new Fenix 6 only displays pace in ten second intervals (occasionally a five will show up).  For example, if I am trying to run a 7:37 pace, my watch will show 7:30 or 7:40, which may not sound like a big difference but it is huge over a marathon etc. (difference between success and epic failure).

I cant believe my $1,000 watch can not track pace as well as my Garmin 235 could.  I have 100% checked that i am using lap pace and not instant pace.  I have tried all three the GPS options and I still cannot get an accurate lap pace.  I also have verified I a not on a power saving setting.

Any ideas.. anyone else have this issue?

  • I am the the only one that has an issue with LAP Pace... Hoping I can return the watch, or I am going to have to sell it, because it is worthless as pace prediction goes.

I am having the same exact problem. I got the vivoactive 4 yesterday. Did a 19 mile long run workout today and the whole time under “lap pace” it showed 6:00-6:05-6:10 then when I would hit a mile it would be 6:01 or something.  I recently had a 235 and a Vivoactive 3 the lap pace always showed the estimated value to the second which is vital when racing because pacing to the second is a big deal.  Did you find anything out with your situation?

  • I ended up setting my watch to gps only and it seems to be working better.  I can’t believe no one else has this issue.  My pace at the start of a mile still jumps by 20 seconds, so I wait for a minute or so before looking at my watch.

it’s unbelievable that a 1000 dollar device cannot perform the same function as well as entry level gps watch.

I just bought the F6 Pro a week ago and I’m already considering returning it for the same reason. Just curious if your situation ever improved or if you stuck with the watch? Funny enough, when I use the biking features all speed adjustments are instantaneous, both accelerating and coming to a dead stop. Additionally, minor increments in speed changes as well (14.2, 14.3,etc.). So, the watch clearly has the ability but it does seem very odd to me that the running pace would be any different. I’m also seeing an issue when I use the pace pro function, I see a different split pace on the PacePro widget than I do on the standard overview widget.

  • Yes .. I never use the real-time pace but the predictive mile pace is now dead on .  I ran a half marathon and was hitting my splits the second, right at the mile marker.  Huge improvement.

  • Hi! I tried the PacePro strategy for the first time today. I set the tempo/average tempo field. Yes, in this field, the Tempo is always shown as a multiple of 5 seconds. 6-10, 6-15, etc. At the Same time, the training field displayed a different tempo that did not coincide with the first field. In the headphones, the prompts told me an average tempo that didn't match the average tempo on the watch. Where to watch and who to listen to!!??))

Hi mrhopely3! I'm having the same issue with vivoactive 4s, I called garmin support and they provided no assistance :( Did you have any luck figuring out how to fix it?

Same issue but with a 645 music. No where near as accurate as my old TomTom watch, either pace or elevation. Luckily it's selling for more 2nd hand than I paid new gor it 6 months ago.

I just don't get how it can be so bad that basic entry level watches are more accurate.

  • Any update on this? Is it really no Garmin watch that can estimate a correct lap average pace other than in steps of 5 sec?
Seems like it according to this: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=i6yDMDvr9X6R5Yjfbj2gi7

This is a reason I would look to Polar os something else.
