Stair stepper activity

Hi guys,

what activity should I use for stepper machine activity? I am a little bit confused, but I must admit I have not used any of them yet in the gym, only tested both at home while walking. I have never used Garmin watch for that kind of a activity yet.

I could use STAIR STEPPER but when I finish workout I can't edit numbers of floors climbed/steps done, and it does not count floors climbed, or I could use FLOOR CLIMB in which I can type in and edit amount of floors climbed.

Why STAIR STEPPER does not count floors? It could be done by calibrating the watch after stepper machine activity finished by typing in how many floors whe have climbed.

Thank you

I have the same issue. I just cannot understand why we can't manually add a field for floors and stairs climbed. The watch of course can't recognize the floors or steps because we are not really moving upwards and normally hold the hands on the bars/handles. There are other activities that have the same problem. I think Garmin created all this activities without which data fields are really useful.

  • The Fenix measures your climbed floors with the Barometer. By doing the Stair Stepper activity you don't climb up any floor. That would be really dificult to measure in a exact way.

  • I understand, but why in that case I cant edit/type floors climbed after activity has been finished/uploaded to Connect? I can read amount of floors done on stepper in gym, and then I could type data in to a garmin connect. Or watch itself could ask at the end of activity, how many floors I have done and calibrate itself, same as with treadmil when I use it for the first time to calculate distance. Surely Garmin could improve it for example by calculating steps per floors, or just by asking at the end of activity how many floors we have done. Simple but so helpful.

STAIR STEPPER seems to be pointless activity as FLOORS CLIMBED works better in that case. And it so easy to rectify it by Garmin

  • why in that case I cant edit/type floors climbed after activity has been finished/uploaded to Connect?

Are you sure that you can't?

I don't have a stair-stepper activity on my watch to try this with, but I just opened a running activity I did, and clicked on the Settings icon (looks like a gear shape near the top-right on the Connect web interface), then "Edit". And it gave me the ability to edit the elevation gain/loss, and enter whatever numbers I want.

  • No, you cant. I checked it few times. In FLOOR CLIMB you can, and in STAIR STEPPER you cant... looks like I will have to use FLOOR CLIMB for my in gym activity on stepper machine. STAIRS STEPPER should have more fields to edit, ie distance covered. I am really surprised and disappointed. Not only because it should calibrate itself as with TREADMILL when used for the first time, but also it does not let you to add or edit floors climbed, or even steps done...not to mention distance...

  • Have you tried making a new custom activity? Maybe you can make a copy of the treadmill activity, and add logging for floors climbed to it? No idea if that's possible, but maybe something to try.

No you can't edit or add the data fields to add steps or floors. You just can edit distance which is pretty useless because not all stair steppers use this as data output.

  • So STAIRS STEPPER seems to be a pointless activity, it has just been added for sake of being there, but it doesnt make sense using it. I am surprised Garmin did not look at it yet, and the easiest way to improve it is an option to edit floors/steps, and an easy way - to ask user to Enter number of floors climbed at the end of activity. The best solution would be calibrating stepper with watch after first use same as with first treadmill use so Garnin could count floors itself by just counting steps... easy

It's not the only activity that has the issue. They added a lot of activities just to make them look good. I brought this up already months ago on my vivoactive 3 and I never got a response :-(

  • So just to clarify for us please, what is the FLOOR CLIMB activity missing? It seems like it would work for everything you want it to do.

It would show that you climbed 0 floors at the end, but you could just edit that later right?
