I am wanting to buy a Fenix but a deal breaker for me is always on watch face. Is it always on or does it time out to a power saving face. Happy to lose a little battery life to have a true always on watch face.

The thing is, fénix has a type of LCD display, so it is always on, because it is reflecting the surrounding light, and therefore using very limited power. Because of this you won't see it in the dark though, and therefore there is a button to switch on backlight, or I think also permanent backlight (uses much power naturally).
It only draws power when the pixel change state. The always on display is one of the things the Garmin device is superior. It can run 20 days with measuring your heart rate 24/7 and have the display on all the time.

You're in luck, then The watchface is always on. In fact, the only way to turn the watchface off is to turn the whole watch off.
The backlight typically isn't always on, usually only during button presses and notifications, but you can also have it turn on automatically with "gestures" (like when you left your arm up to look at the time), or you can even set it to stay on forever (though obviously that's a battery drain, and honestly not needed except at night.)
Thanks for the replies. Just purchased the 6x. I was going from a gear s3 with super slick HD watch faces. After firing it up and realizing the watch faces on the fenix are so basic I dont really care if they are always on. Love the watch anyway but hopefully one day soon we can have the best of a Garmin with the best of Samsung/AW.
Garmin makes sport focused watches with long lasting batteries. If you really want something that resembles Samsung (screen wise), try the new Garmin VENUE.
You can set the watch manually into a battery saver mode. You can put this mode on the control menu, so easy to activate/deactivate.
