Fenix 6X Pro- slow down when using most Connect IQ watch faces

I was glad to see that the new SDK was finally released by Garmin and that more and more apps are becoming available for the new Fenix 6 series.

I have installed 4-5 custom watch faces but keep on going to the stock ones after a few hours at most. It feels like the watch slows down a lot- for example, pressing the top right button to select an activity takes a second or two longer.

Going back to the watch face and to the various widgets also takes annoyingly long to load as well. Anyone else seeing this?!!

I don't recall this being a problem with my prior Fenix 5 Plus or MARQ Expedition.

  • Since we're having a discussion about delays after button presses... I wish Garmin would kill the unnecessarily long 4-5 second delay after pressing the stop button to end a workout before displaying the resume/save screen.  Anyone know why the watch doesn't show those options immediately after pressing stop ?   I thought this was a processing issue with my old Fenix 5. But it's just as annoyingly slow on the 6 Solar.

  • It's the same on every watch...or it has been in my experience.

  • 1. GearMin watchface

    2. Slowness in accessing the widgets (the ones accessible by pressing up or down while on the watch face), and general slowness in "exiting" the watch face (to start activities, for example)

    3. Fresh install of watch, install and use GearMin watchface. Press up or down to access the widgets. Observe that they load very slowly. Go back to the GearMin watchface, press start to start an activity. Observe that it takes several seconds for the activity menu to show up.

    5. This is a Fenix 6x pro sapphire

    6. Yes.

    7. Yes.

    8. No.

  • Gearmin, Actiface, SC8, SC9

Slowness leaving the main screen and coming back to it

Install and observe how much the watch slows down as a result, difference is really obvious and you will want to delete all of your watch faces

    Fenix 6X PRO Sapphire

    Of course

    Yes

Nothing comes to mind, other than: please treat this seriously!!!

  • Just tried NoFrills- works better than all of the 4 watch faces listed earlier. Still somewhat sluggish though..

  • I am seeing the same issue on the fenix 6X Pro.

Any graphically or data heavy watch face from Connect IQ causes about a 1 to 2 sec lag from when the Activity button is pressed, or when switching to the first widget.

Trainer by Garmin is a good example to try.

I have logged a support ticket to Garmin so they are aware.

I saw the same issue on my fenix 5X, in the later firmware releases it received, around v8 or 9, but it was improved after those releases but there was always some lag there..

I was hoping the faster CPU of the 6X would have seen an end to the lag, hoping for a proper fix.

Pretty happy with everything else the watch does though.

Any news on this one? I get constant reboots on third party watch faces

  • I videoed the slow/lag behavior when switching to the Activity List or Widget when using 2 different Connect IQ watch faces.

  • This is actually still a problem. I’ve had my 6X Sapphire for 2 weeks now and I think the watch is cool but sooo slow that I’m thinking about returning....

  • Its never been fixed, probably cant be, its most likely the way the watch works.

I'm guessing third party watch faces are stored in a separate memory area that is slower to access than the built in watches faces since they are part of the firmware ROM.

From the ticket I logged with Garmin Australia back in Nov 2019, they eventually came back after 2 to 3 months and said to simply use less graphical/data intensive IQ watch faces or use the built in ones.

So now I use the built in Analog that displays 6 data fields around the circumference or TSWF04, which has minimal lag considering how much data it shows.
