Fenix 6X Pro- slow down when using most Connect IQ watch faces

I was glad to see that the new SDK was finally released by Garmin and that more and more apps are becoming available for the new Fenix 6 series. 

I have installed 4-5 custom watch faces but keep on going to the stock ones after a few hours at most. It feels like the watch slows down a lot- for example, pressing the top right button to select an activity takes a second or two longer.

Going back to the watch face and to the various widgets also takes annoyingly long to load as well. Anyone else seeing this?!!

I don't recall this being a problem with my prior Fenix 5 Plus or MARQ Expedition.

  • Sure: I don't use them due to how slow everything becomes but here's what I have tried so far:

    SC8, SC9, Actiface, Gearmin;

    I already deleted Activity Graph 

  • Everyone, thank you for all this feedback, but we have not noticed anything like this on our side but still, want to investigate this.

    Could you please list the Connect IQ apps that you have installed to your device? Also, let me know if you had just one of those installed, do you see this slowness then?  Or do you have to have X number of apps on your device? Are they widgets or watch faces or both? If they are widgets, do you have Widget Glaces on or off? Also, does your power setting affect the slowness at all? If you add the same widgets to a fenix 5 / 5 plus, do you see the same slowness on both watches?

    I know that sounds like a lot of questions, but the first step for us to fix it is to reproduce it. So, if you have the time to answer these questions, and/or want to help test it with me, feel free too.  If you see anything that might that affects the slowness on your device, but when you turn it on or off, the slowness goes away, feel free to post that too so I or another user can try it on their device.

    I look forward to all your replies since troubleshooting with all you makes my job great every day!

  • No worries, I know there are tons of smart people here in the forums and a lot of you love troubleshooting too. 

    Also, if you have one thing from the Connect IQ store that has caused slowness in the past, then you should talk to the developer of that app.  If apps use to work and they do not on the fenix 6 now then that is something we are interested in and see what might be different in another Garmin device and the fenix 6.

  • I  tried a number of watch faces and they have all caused a reboot.  I currently have SC8, GearMin and the StopWatch App.  SC8 causes a reboot when I go to dismiss an email notification and at the end of a bike ride as well as randomly.  GearMin causes random reboots. The factory default faces work just fine. 

  • As I mentioned before 'Trainer' watch face is one of Connect IQ app that affect slowness of the  6x sapphire. As far as I know it is made by Garmin, so it should be easy to check it.

    I tried to use it but it respondes (shows up or disappears) with 1-2 sec. delay. It was only one CIQ app installed in watch mode. I also use two data fields during activity (Stryd Power and DozenRun) but nothing else.

    It is impossible to compare this watch face with the other Garmin unit (I own also fenix 5x plus or forerunner 945) because there is no version for this units.

  • I use the GearMin watchface, it's also the only Connect IQ installed on my 6x pro, and I notice the slowdown because pressing up or down (from the watch face) to access the widgets has a 3 second delay before the widget list loads. Once they have loaded, they are fine until I go back to the watchface. If I try to access them again, there is another 3s to wait. With the native watch face, getting to the widgets is immediate.

    Since there is a good number of people reporting issues with Connect IQ apps, I want to get this addressed in the best way and easiest way that we can.

    If you have the time, it is best to reach out to Garmin Support and work with one of the Support Experts to get this reported.

    If you do not have the time, and/or you are located in a location that it better to work through the forums, then I will report it for you.

    For me to report this issue for you, please fill out the information below so that I can easily report it for you and so the issue gets reported correctly.

    1. Which Garmin Connect Apps (watch faces/widgets) are you using?
    2. What are you experiencing? (Slowness, reboots, ...)
    3. What is the best way for us here at Garmin to reproduce your issue? (Install and scroll down, install and turn on, ..)
    4. What is the Unit ID of your device? Main Menu -> System -> About (The serial number too small for me to read, so I will not expect anyone else to read it too but if you want, you can post that too)
    5. Which fenix 6 do you own (fenix 6 Non-Pro, fenix 6 Pro & Sapphire or fenix 6 Solar version)
    6. Can Garmin use the email address attached to your forum account to create a ticket under your name?
    7. If need be, can Garmin access your Garmin Connect account to look for information if there is a need too?
    8. Is there any extra information that Garmin needs to know about this?

    I will do my best to check this thread daily.  If I do not reply, do not worry, I will get your information.  Also, once we have a better understanding of this issue and/or do not need any more information on this issue, I will post in this thread.  Also if and when there is a fix in place, I will post in this thread too.
