Open water swim route drawing

I've just tried today open water swim with my Fenix 6X Pro Solar, i noticed that route drawing on the map while swim and in the summary of activity is different from Garmin Connect and express, here you are:

This is the activity on the watch:

And this is activity on Garmin connect:

In Garmin Connect, track is almost perfect but not on the watch. I also stopped activity in the middle and on the watch there was no line drawn on watch's map.

If the raw data were that pants then the distance and other metrics would be way off (which they aren't) . I agree there seems to be some 'magic sauce' going on in the background with OWS, as it seems…

[Edit: Adding up front that this is NOT a GPS accuracy issue, it’s that the summary map is not being drawn correctly on the watch.]

renton82 you're not alone. I've also seen this on my 6X Pro Solar from my swim yesterday. Details have been emailed in to the Fenix beta team.

However, the GPS track and distance is actually really good and displays fine on Strava https://www.strava.com/activities/2706799935 and Garmin Connect (below)

Will be interesting to hear what the beta team have to say, but my feeling is that the watch shows you the raw data, which is then post processed by the 'magical' algorithm' into something that resembles the actual path taken.

If the raw data were that pants then the distance and other metrics would be way off (which they aren't) . I agree there seems to be some 'magic sauce' going on in the background with OWS, as it seems to record general data every second to the fit file but then 'simplifies' the GPS track in to less granular straight legs (need to zoom in to the DCR Analyzer to see the effect). I think the net effect is that the usual algorithm to display the activity track on the watch isn't coping well with the magic sauce coated OWS activities.

Suunto got this working almost perfect with the Sony gps chip in the S9 . Let's hope Garmin can get it to work just as well in F6X. It's not there yet, that's for sure.

I think you’re reading the issue in this thread wrong; it’s NOT a poor GPS accuracy thing. The GPS track and distance being recorded by the Fenix 6X Pro Solar is really good and displays just fine in Garmin Connect, Strava or any other platform you load the fit file to. The issue is simply that the summary map of the activity displayed on the watch is wrong.
