GPS + Glonass vs GPS + Galileo

Has anyone done any detailed comparisons between the tracking accuracy of different satellite modes on the Fenix 6 yet?

Is it better to stick with the tried and tested GPS + Glonass or is GPS + Galileo theoretically superior even though it's still in development?

  • You'll see in this shot, that GPS+ Galileo would be the best options for me right now:

Does your app show signal strength on another screen or just the number of satellites in view?  On the snapshot I posted, there are 8 Galileo and 9 Glonass satellites in view. But due to signal strength, even if you eliminated the strongest 2 Glonass satellites available making it 8 to 7, the 7 Glonass satellites would be more preferable to Galileo in my case.

  • This is what the other screen shows:

  • I didn't know if you were going off signal strength or viewable satellites in your earlier post when you said Galileo was your best option.  Anyway, unless Garmin changes things,  I think the best option right now is to use a phone app to not only see what's available, but more importantly, which combination would give you a better signal when starting an activity.

  • My Garmin Forerunner 405 had a page like that.

It would be cool if they gave us the "Satellite Information Page"

  • Exactly, the Forerunner 405CX had it for sure, I'm not sure about the FR610 but it might have had it as well.

  • My Garmin Forerunner 405 had a page like that.

This was prior to the addition to Galileo.  Did the FR405 have Glonass also or was this information page for GPS Only?  If it was for GPS Only, that may be why it isn't available anymore.

  • The FR405CX, FR610 had GPS only. Both had the satellite/accuracy page

FR620 and FR630 had support for GLONASS on top of GPS, and as far as I recall this is where the satellite/accuracy page disappeared.

FR645/M introduced Galileo for the first time in one of the FW updates in late 2018

  • Any updates on this question? I remember  saying when the F6 was released that it wasn't as well optimized yet for Galileo given it was new compared to the optimizations they've done over time for GLONASS (which is why activity profiles default to GPS + GLONASS). Just curious whether progress made over the last year would change that recommendation. And why not allow folks to use all three (or, better yet, make the watch smart enough to know which systems to engage for a given time/location)?

  • It also depends on your location. I live on Europe and here, in this specific moment, above me there are 2 GPS satellites, 9 Galileo ones and 0 Glonass, at least according to the app I use to monitor the satellites constellation.

Living in Europe GPS+Galileo is the most common choice among the people I know.

  • Galileo is european, GLONASS is russian. That sets it for me.
