Fenix 6X Pro

Purchased 6X Pro a bit ago, somewhat happy with the device however I have a Mac and

  1. I cannot access the device to install any beta updates.  In other words the Mac does not see it as a external HD neither does Android Transfer.
  2. Garmin basecamp does not see the device either so there is no way to plan a trip/hike using basecamp (mixed blessing)
  3. There is also no reason to buy any maps on garmin since the maps on the device cannot be seen by basecamp.
  4. Neither can basecamp see the pre-loaded maps that come on the 6X

I think this is a big mistake As Garmin has effectively removed anyone with the 6 series on a mac from the customer base???

Does anyone have any input on this??

  • I'm on a mac as well, but I've had no trouble using either Basecamp or Android Transfer. Both programs recognize the watch, and basecamp loads the pre-loaded maps. Have you updated the watch software to 3.0?

I have issues with Fenix 6x pro and basecamp on a Mac. My Mac see’s the device but hangs whilst maps sync, this takes literally hours so essentially renders basecamp unusable.

Also which maps are included on the Fenix6x Pro? I wanted to plan some hikes but I see ski maps only

I'm in the U.S. and these are the maps that came installed on my 6X Pro from Garmin:

    HTH

  • Basecamp 4.8.4 or later will see a Fenix 5 Plus or Fenix 6 series device just fine (including the installed maps on the Fenix; the first time it sees the maps on the Fenix it will take AGES to initialise them), earlier versions of basecamp won't as the USB mode was changed from USB Mass Storage to USB MTP (Media Transport Protocol) mode, which the Mac does NOT natively support (Windows does).

As to seeing the Fenix 6 as a folder/device, you have to use Android File Transfer or Commander One as both these support USB MTP mode, finder and many other Mac file managers do NOT. However, you also need to not have Garmin Express running at the same time as it will lock the Fenix and stop Android File Transfer from seeing and allowing access to the Fenix 6 (or Fenix 5 Plus models).

    Great to know, thanks

  • I have to set usb mode to Garmin on the watch to see the Fenix 6 in BaseCamp 486 is that correct?

  • Mine is set to MTP and works fine in BaseCamp on a Mac, however it won’t allow you to install beta firmware or access the filesystem (folders) on it. To get that level of access you need to use AndroidFileTransfer or another MTP enabled file manager (Finder won’t work with MTP).

  • So I have been fiddling with this and fiddling with this with both Android file transfer and commander one rarely does Android file transfer fire up or see the watch, base camp still does not see to watch and I have the latest version.

The watch is set in the correct USB mode so I don't really know what the deal is maybe there's a security setting on the Mac I have Catalina just recently installed.

I have talked to Garmin about this and it was we kind of got it to work but it was intermittent at best and bass camp still never did see the watch although Android file transfer kind of did it after killing a chicken and drain it of all of its blood etc etc

It just doesn't seem like it should be this much hassle just to get base camper Android file transfer to see the watch I just don't understand why this is so difficult

  • You cant have Garmin Express running at the same time as that will cause AndroidFileTransfer to NOT see the Fenix as it will be in use (locked) by Garmin Express, probably the same issue with BaseCamp. I have a 6x and it works fine with BaseCamp and AndroidFileTransfer... I don't think Catalina is the issue, as I have it installed and I'm not seeing any issue with BaseCamp, etc.

Let me be very clear, this is a Mac issue as it doesn't natively support MTP, you have to use third party tools that DO support MTP, or just use a Windows PC as that DOES support MTP natively. Alternatively, just get rid of the 6X and get a 5X instead as that supports USB Mass Storage Mode which is supported natively by Mac OSX, Windows and most other OSes.

  • My F6x Pro is located under external storage on my windows pc or android device. no extra software needed.
