fenix 6 not detecting pool laps/measuring distance?

My first 'Pool Swim' workout did not detect/measure my number of laps... so no distance recorded.

Anyone faced the same issue? Is it a bug?

Thanks in advance

  • I'm happy for you. I'm no where near as advanced a swimmer as you judging by your distance but my swimming is fairly consistent and I never stop. I now look at the time it takes me to swim each length and it's almost always 1min 15sec. I do this now as I don't trust the result at the end.

I have also experimented with the training plans, I have created this workout and yet I still get the same issue. Even though I tell it I am going to swim 200m it still counts me as going further.

Are you hitting the lap button at the end of each interval to switch to rest mode? Just a thought that occurred to me since I know some swimmers don't do that and it ends up counting extra due to movements they make during their rest (at least until the auto rest feature is out of beta).

If it's not that I'd suggest taking a look at the individual lap data and see if there is a pattern to where it is adding the extra lengths and also make sure it's detecting your stroke properly, If there is a consistent pattern then you might be able to track it down.

And even in programmed workout, aside from drills, it still uses the accelerometer to detect lengths. That way you can extend or shorten an interval if you'd like to, so like you experienced that won't solve this issue for you.

  • Your pool is outdoors but you still have not said whether you use Pool Swim or Open Water. Are you using Pool Swim?

I'm not much faster than you in the pool or the open water. I only swim front crawl as I'm an adult onset swimmer and never learnt other strokes.

I've rarely had problems over the years since Garmin provided watches that could log distance in the pools. If I have it's because I've had something interfere with my swim during the course of a length. And over the years that people have been discussing issues with distance detection in the pool the problems usually come down to any or all of the following:

    • Poor technique
    • Interruption of some sort during a length
    • Not pressing the Lap button as soon as a set is finished

Very rarely has it come down to a problem with the watch. If you believe the problem lies with the watch and nothing that you do, then you should contact Garmin Support.

  • I’ve been for 2 training swims and recorded 0 lengths & 0 strokes, Hart rate works ok and I’m hitting pause after every set. Going to try a reset first

  • you mean reset to default settings or which reset? ... And did it work for you afterwards?

today did my first swim with the fenix 6x pro (fw 11.10) and did not work it shows only shows two lengths that's 50m in the 25m pool detected as freestyle. I do use pause/rest via lap if stopping at one end but the rest of the swim is only shown as  "rest" . this worked perfectly  fine with the Fenix3 and only changed watch not swim style ;)

  • Are you certain you are pressing the buttons correctly?

    • Press start to swim.
    • Press lap to rest
    • Press lap to swim again
    • Press lap to rest
    • Press lap to swim

Could you have neglected to press lap at the start of swimming again?

  • yeah pretty sure about that ;)  next swim will use both watches and be super vigilant ... just not sure when that  next swimm will be nowadays ;)

I have recently bought same watch, love everything about it, but have the same issue as you, no distance recorded, heart rate and timer working, but 0 distance.
