Anyone tested Ultratrac yet ?

Hi there,

I just received my F6 sapphire DLC carbon grey this morning :) everything not set up yet but I can already say I'm quite happy with this new toy !

I was wondering if anyone had already tried a walk or hike (or even run?) activity with Ultratrac yet... And noticed (or not) any improvement over the previous watches versions.
Since there was no notice from Garmin that the algorithm changed (such as Ultratrac 2.0 or so !) I guess it'll still give the pointless, inaccurate GPS tracks as before, but I'm just curious.
Anyway I'll probably try it myself in the next few days and report back Slight smile

  • There is one thing that I really would like to know. Slight smile I have a F5X and the Ultratrac is useless.

And I'd like to hear about tests of the F6's "Expedition ultra-long GPS" mode that supposedly gives you many DAYS of GPS, with a customisable interval between GPS fixes. Anyone?  (And sorry for attempted hijacking of the thread but I thought anyone interested in Ultratrac might also be interested in Expedition mode. I know I am.)

  • Still waiting for my watch to arrive tomorrow, but I've read that the expedition mode's GPS interval can be customized - it's 1 hour by default, but you can make it more or less.

I can't honestly envision a situation where anyone would 1) have zero access to a battery pack or USB charger for over a month, and 2) find it acceptable to have zero sensor data and only hourly GPS points (even when walking, you could easily go over 2 miles between gps points). I suspect it's simply a marketing thing, so they can say "our watch battery cooooouuuuuuld last over 3 months in certain scenarios!" Nevermind that it's incredibly unlikely that anyone would be in that scenario.

Nope, heartily and respectfully disagree about the lack of a use-case. Through hikers long for this sort of longevity! (See what I did there?) Carrying spare batteries and power 'bricks' is a pain.

OK, so maybe a months is a bit long, even for me, but 2 weeks between re-supply is something I have done, and I did carry a brick and it wasn't too bad, but it would have been better if I didn't need it.

Yeah, an hour between points is perhaps a bit much, but it's adjustable, so maybe 10 or 30 mins? You can drop points manually too.

So, OKay maybe I do agree after all that in the extremes it is a bit unlikely, but having the choice of adjustable sample times is much better than not having them

When you have a chance to play, let us know how it went!

  • Is it possible to set the interval to record every 10 minutes? Like breadcrumbs, but as a track. That would be marvelous! They could include that in the F5's ! Specially because the battery of the F5 is not as powerful compared to F6, it would make it last longer.

The manual says it is adjustable, but in Expedition mode, not Ultratrac.   Changing interval

and others elsewhere have filled in the details that the manual has omitted, saying 10, 20, 30 mins are possible (or maybe it was 15 mins increments like what JW_Z says below... )

  • I have not tested Ultratrac or Expidition mode.

In Expedition mode you can customize the Recording Interval to 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 minutes.
You can also set if you want to Record After Sunset.

I tried it today on a super short run. It ended up .08 off for one mile vs my 5S in regular mode. I need to run more in regular mode and try again. Also wondering a footpod would help on accuracy in Ultratrac mode???
