Sapphire vs. Glass Screen Protector?

Am I missing something? Why would I purchase a sapphire crystal watch (+$100.00 6x pro) over a $5 glass screen protector, especially in 'light' of the fact the sapphire model permanently reduces screen clarity and light transmission? Bragging rights?

  • I own a Fenix 5x+ with sapphire.  I also have dress watch with a sapphire Crystal.  The 5x+ never got scratched but the dress watch did ironically as the 5x+ got a lot more wear on it.

I purchased the 6xPro Solar with gorilla glass. It is subjectively more clear and easier to read than the 5x+. (It's also bigger so not a completely fair comparison.)  I would be willing to go with the Gorilla glass straight up and take my chances.  I did purchase a glass protector mentioned here somewhere and I am really pleased with how clear it is with little if any light loss.  I may remove it.  I can see how the sapphire would give you more confidence but I've had the 3HR, 920XT, 310XT and 305 and haven't had a lens scratched yet.

I like the clarity of the 6xPro and have 0 regrets but I bought the 5x+ with sapphire for the peace of mind and really liked it as well.
Aw heck.  Go with the Gorilla Glass.  There - its settled.

  • From reading this whole thread, and from owning a sapphire Fenix and a non-sapphire Fenix, I think you can't go wrong. The gorilla glass is pretty tough, but the sapphire is slightly tougher. The sapphire is perfectly legible, but the gorilla glass is probably slightly more clear and less reflective. The sapphire obviously costs more, but probably has a better resale value. Screen protectors are okay, and I had one on my non-sapphire Fenix for its entire life of several years, but I took it off my sapphire Fenix because I thought it was unnecessary.

Bottom line: They're both great watches and the differences are fairly minor. I think you will be happy no matter which one you get.

  • The site has shown the F6 as having Gorilla Glass DX ever since I bought my F6S Pro a couple of months ago. They probably corrected it somewhere.

I wonder if you buy a expensive phone if you would buy a screen protector for it?
