It could be great if I could monitor actual shots.
For example, by monitoring recoil the watch can monitor shots and can show split times , time until first shot, etc.
This could be an ideal shooting timer…
The Suunto Traverse Alpha has a 'shot detection' function and also save the WP of the detected shot to the track. (Probably using the accelerometer)
Maybe use the Garmin suggestion facility to…
As someone from the UK where folks aren't packing firearms and heavy weaponry this seem like a really odd request too be honest.
I am guessing everyone wishing for this is from the USA? I don't think…
What would you like to monitor?
You can duplicate the activity that most closely matches gun range activity and rename it and change every field and setting (garmin watches are extremely customizable in that respect)
Maybe don’t use one of the running or walking activities as a basis as these feed into the Firstbeat metrics. “Other” would be a good match (unless you walk a lot at the range, then “Hiking” might be a good candidate. Ultimately it doesn’t matter though
BTW have a look at the app store, maybe there is an activity in there for gun ranges which might track other stuff also
I've thought about this too, but ultimately I came to the conclusion that most gun range activity doesn't involve much exercise, so it's not really worth monitoring/recording any of it. However, it could involve a fair bit of walking (walking out and setting up targets and walking back, etc), but the watch is already recording your walking anyways, so a special mode wouldn't add much.
If you like to do running and gunning type stuff (3-gun, etc), or tactical training or whatnot, then I am not sure what I'd pick for a mode or what to measure/monitor. If you do find something that works, let us know!
I would love a gun range activity too. I do the odd IPSC competition (and occasional training). When training, it's more of an interval thing, while in competitions there's long periods of more or less inactivity while waiting for the next stage. Cleaning and reloading magazines doesn't much count for anything according to the watch.
While the physical exercise part of it would be great, I'm not sure if the watch is suited as a shot timer. I did have a shot timer app on my Android Wear watch, but that relied on the microphone. It never really worked. There's dedicated wrist-mounted shot timers too, and they're all various grades of almost working.
I haven't found a decent alternative to a regular timer (possibly with a belt clip.

Maybe use the Garmin suggestion facility to incorporate this?
There is an app in the Connect IQ store called Wrist MT. It's a shot timer that uses the watch sensors to time the shots. I've never used it, but you can give that a try.

I am guessing everyone wishing for this is from the USA? I don't think this feature would be compatible with European sensibility too be honest, and I suspect that is an area Garmin would rightly want to avoid.
