Time sync off by 7 seconds

Both with GPS or paired phone sync, the time is off by 7 seconds on my fenix 6!

Do others have the same issue?

  • You are welcome! I hope I expressed myself correctly. There are SINGLE reports that there has been misconduct. It doesn't affect everyone. The watch normally switches off GPS as soon as it is not needed.

  • Yes, I fully understood you. This occasional self activation of GPS is rather abnormal and I can read more about it in the othet thread that you have provided the link. Thanks!

  • " It seems, that by syncing with a paired phone only minutes are adjusted and seconds are left on their own."

I noticed this was also the case when trying to do a manual time adjustment, which caught me by surprise the first time I tried it.  Seems unnecessary to have to walk outside to do a GPS sync to get the thing adjusted to the exact second, if you have an accurate time source available.

Anybody know if there's any way to work around that, and set the time manually to the exact second?

Also, regarding phone time accuracy, I've noticed that my phone time was slightly different between being at home and when I was at work pre-COVID.  Only a second or two difference, but it was noticeable.  This may vary by phone and by carrier, but surprised me when I first noticed it as I thought all cellular networks synched precisely to GPS time, but apparently they don't.

  • It seems, that by syncing with a paired phone only minutes are adjusted and seconds are left on their own.

No. At least that wouldn't be the case with me. No matter how wrong my watch went. It doesn't matter if it was 2 seconds before the sync, or 5 seconds, or 20 seconds. After the sync with GCM, the deviation was always the same 10 seconds.

  • Hi all,

An interesting thing has happend with the time sync, thought to share, maybe you'll have some ideas about reasons.

I had not synced manually with GPS for a couple of months or so and my watch was already 40 sec late. Just wanted to experiment what happens when it reaches 59 sec delay, would it go late beyond 1 min or not. However, I had to use manual set option today and when I set back to the automatic time setting, it became precise in a matter of few seconds. I even did not perform the sync with my phone. I am really puzzled of how this watch works.

    1. Regular sync with the paird phone does not update the seconds.

    2. Manual time sync with the paired phone does not update the seconds.

    3. Manual time sync with GPS updates the seconds.

    4. Switching back from the manual to automatic time setting updates the seconds.

I am amazed of how this watch operates, maybe you have any ideas why it happens as discribed?

My watch is Fenix 6 Solar.

    Thanks!

  • thanks a bunch, my fenix 7X had the same problem and the solution was:

    1. going from auto to manual
    2. changing time in manual
    3. going back and syncing with phone

and the problem was fixed and I'm now within 2 seconds.

  • Many thanks for your feedback.

As it was too complicated to achieve the obvious, which is time accuracy on the not-so-cheap watch, I decided to manually synchronise it with GPS on a daily basis and have been doing so for a few years now. In this way it is more or less accurate to the second. Still, it is odd to have to go to all that hassle with this type of watch.

  • Thank you!

The same procedure worked for me on 7XPro.

It is really amazing how this very expensive piece of technology can't do the very basic thing that it needs to do.

Garmin, why is this not your priority 0 issue?

I understand that there are many fancy things to fix and implement but come on... Keeping time is THE basic thing for any watch.

Suggesting as answer so that others may stumble this solution more quickly. All credit goes to user 3555563 who suggested this procedure.
