I'm sure someone will rush in here before long and defend Garmin's decisions on these updates.
Crazy that the Fenix E receives all those features and the Fenix 7/Epix Pro versions don't. Garmin being Garmin.
Here's my theory: the "totally new UI / system" of the Fenix 8 is basically the same as the Venu 3 and newer Forerunners. In the past, when asked why the Venu 3 had a much nicer and smoother…
I’m really surprised about this. I moved over to the Fenix / Epix line from the 955 as it appeared the Fenix line would be more premium and receive most of the updates (as per previous updates)
Yes very good, but why does the FR255 have the primary electronic altitude display from the G5?
Maybe Garmin should focus first on fixing some very basic things that are not working on my Epix pro 2 like syncing activity / active calories from my Edge when recording activity with Edge. Or it would be nice if a course created on Garmin connect would simply sync to my watch instead of disappearing into thin air.
Keep us posted on which brand you go with that has all the same features and no bugs.
Yes but first can you explain to us why the FR255 has the primary electronic altitude display of the G5? We are not as expert about Garmin as you so we need your help to understand.
That was a joke. The G5 is a $5,000 electronic flight instrument that Garmin makes for fixed wing aircraft.
I didn't really think I was getting the primary attitude display from the G5 in my Epix Pro (although it would be nice).
Well If you are into just running und want sapphire glass, the Garmin offer is unfortunately very restricted and completely overpriced (and overkilled, wondering how many people are diving in winter :) ).
Remember the 1000€ Epix Pro Gen2 that did not got all the updates was the luxury / flag ship of Garmin less than 4 months ago…
The alternative here seems indeed not to be the Fenix 8 but the either 255/955 and using the watch for sports activities only.
Here's my theory: the "totally new UI / system" of the Fenix 8 is basically the same as the Venu 3 and newer Forerunners. In the past, when asked why the Venu 3 had a much nicer and smoother UI compared to the Epix 2 Pro, Garmin's answer was that they deliberately wanted to keep the Fenix with a more serious UI. I call it BS. I suspect the real reason is that they have (or had) 2 completely distinct teams working on each platform. The Fenix devs, I assume, are coming from legacy devices, while the Venu (and newer Forerunner) devs have a more recent, modern platform.
So the reason we see most of these new features coming to the Forerunner but not the Fenix 7 series is because the Fenix 8 and the FR 255/265 share the same base platform, so it's just a matter of toggling features on and off. I doubt most, if any, of those new features will be ported to the Fenix 7 series as well.
But then again: that's just me and my tinfoil hat. I could be completely wrong.
You are right, DC Rainmaker has mentioned that a few times. The Venu/Forerunner watches belong to the Fitness teams and the Fenix/Epix to the Outdoor teams and they work in silos.
I believe Garmin is trying to unify things, but the code base seems to be a complete mess and they probably decided that the Fenix 8/Forerunner 265 are the new baseline and new code will be built based on that.
Older devices (Epix Pro, F7 Pro), although capable of running the new features, are left behind because it's not worth to Garmin to have a dev team working on soon-to-be-deprecated code.
