Hi all,
My wife has the 47mm Epix Pro (Gen 2) and is having all sorts of issues with the accuracy of the distance recorded while she's open water swimming.
We've often run together and the distance recorded by my watch (same watch, but the 51mm version) is pretty much spot on with the distance recorded by hers, so I don't think that there's a generic issue with her GPS.
However, when she goes swimming with her open water swimming friends - various watch brands, but most of them Garmin users - her distances are wildly different to those of the other swimmers. When they all get out the water at the end, the majority of the distances will be very similar, but my wife's mapped route and the distances recorded are wildly different - often very little, or alternatively, almost double the distance of her friends' watches!
If it was just a 'Garmin' and 'open water' thing, I'd probably get it, but when a lot of the other swimmers are using Garmins, too - and models that are not as new or expensive as the Epix Pro - then I can't see why hers is so inaccurate. It's reached the point where she records the activity, but then has to delete it and ask her friends to tag my wife in Strava so that she knows how far she swam! Not really what we bought a £1k watch for and not very practical, either, especially when she's not swimming with friends
I've searched the forums and found the following advice, all of which we've followed but which haven't resolved the issue;
"I am sorry to hear you are having trouble with this. There are few recommendations to help with open water swim.
- Sync the watch with Garmin Express, to ensure the watch has the latest satellite data.
- When starting any GPS activity, we recommend allowing for a GPS soak. For this, select the activity, and allow the watch to acquire satellite reception. Then wait an additional 2-3 minutes before starting the activity timer.
- Use Multi-band or All satellites for GPS in the activity. Menu, Activities and App, Open Water, GPS
- Since the watch will not connect with GPS when the watch is submerge in the water,, so you will need to use a stroke that takes your wrist out of the water, and you will want Every Second Recording enabled. Menu, System, Data Recording, Every Second.
- You can also keep the water under your swim cap, or attach this to a floatee to keep it out of the water more often.
Tips to Improve Accuracy of Open Water Swim Activities"
Does anyone else have any further suggestions, please, before I raise it with Garmin customer support? The watch was brand new at Christmas 2023, so is still under a year old and besides, we have a 2-year warranty on it, so we can always fall back on that if needed. But I'd much prefer it if someone can highlight a menu option, etc. that we can change to resolve this instead of returning it!
Thanks in advance.
