Jacket mode not working anymore

I use Jacket mode in all cycling activities because the pulse data is always crap, about 40 bpm lower than my real HR. That way, when not wearing a HR strap, my activities aren't cluttered by useless pulse data, which will probably also ruin the accuracy of health data, Vo2max prediction, restitution prediction etc.

It has worked fine, turning off the HR sensor during cycling activities. But today, I noticed the bad pulse data was back in Garmin Connect, about 40 bpm below correct HR. I checked my settings, and cycling still has Jacket mode set at standard, but still the HR sensor is on and showing my HR on the data screen instead of "--".

Hope this bug can be fixed in the next update!

I am on 17.23.

  • Its a known bug that Power Mode defaults to Normal irrespective of any setting, was introduced during the last firmware cycle.

After selecting your activity type, before pressing "go", just press middle left, scroll down and select Power Mode, and you'll be able to select Jacket mode in there.

Then just click back to the Activity start screen and you're ready.

  • Not a bug, but a new feature that you probably have configured incorrectly for your use case.

Make sure Source Switching for your wrist HRM is tuned OFF:

MENU > Sensors & Accessories > Wrist Heart Rate > Source Switching [Toggle Off]

This setting will make sure that wrist HR data are not used when there is HR strap.

  • No, I did read the update changelog, and the first thing I did after the 17.23 update was to make sure the Source Switching setting is OFF. The last thing I want is for my Epix to suddenly switch to the unreliable optical sensor when I am wearing a strap that is pretty accurate 99% of the time. And if the strap has a dropout I'd rather have a gap in the pulse graph than have it cluttered by incorrect data.

However, that setting is to allow the Epix to swich sources, but the Power mode configuration settings has an option DISABLE wrist heart rate, which is used in Jacket mode, which I confirmed is not changed. So when OHR is disabled that should override the source switching setting anyway.

Edit: I confirmed this by setting Source Switching to ON, and turned on Jacket mode (after restarting the Epix, like I explained in my reply to 3673816 below) and it DID turn the OHR off.

  • I did try in any way possible to select Jacket mode and double checked it was actually in Jacket mode, but the OHR still didn't turn off.

So I did a restart of the watch, and now it is exactly as you say, but all activities default to Screen Off. If I go into the Activity settings and check, Standard Power Mode is set to whaterver I have set it to (usually Normal or Jacket mode), but when I go to change power mode on-the-fly like you say, it is set to Screen Off, and changing it to Jacket mode now turn off the OHR.

Good to hear it's a known bug, hopefully they'll fix it then Slight smile
