Garmin Epix Pro Gen 2 keeps rebooting endlessly

I've been using Epix Pro Gen 2 for six months. After the function of turning on the screen with a hand-raising gesture stopped working, I turned off the watch through the menu. After this, the clock does not turn on completely. When I press the "Light" button, the initial screen with the "Epix Pro" logo appears and after 20 seconds the screen turns off for 4 seconds, after which the screen with the "Epix Pro" logo turns on again for 20 seconds and then the screen turns off again for 4 seconds. This cycle repeats for several hours. When you press and hold the "Light" button, the watch turns off completely. When connected to a computer, neither Garmin Express nor WebUpdater detects the watch.

Please tell me how to solve this problem.

  • Hi guys,

I am having an issue where my watch won't load past the EPIX screen below.

From a search on the forums it seems the same issue as what the original poster in the post below had.

    forums.garmin.com/.../epix-gen-2-update-problem

It doesn't look like there was a resolution in the above. Some background points to assist:

    • Similar to the post above, I just checked my watch throughout day and it was off.
    • The battery was lowish (~15-20%) but definitely not flat. I don't recall getting the low battery warning.
    • I had recently done a version upgrade, but the problem didn't happen immediately afterwards.

    Things I have tried:

    • Holding the Back button: Nothing happens at all when I hold this button for any length of time.
    • Holding Light: Same as above
    • Holding Back + Light: Same as above
    • Holding all four corner buttons: Same as above
    • Holding Start/Stop when not plugged in: It will boot up until the above Epix loading screen is displayed but will switch off as soon as I let it go.
    • Holding Start/Stop when plugged in: It will boot up and display the above and will stay on for around 5 minutes. In this time I am able to connect to computer and access using Windows and the Garmin Express app, but will eventually switch itself off after a few minutes.

In the Garmin Express app I didn't see anything that would allow me to factory reset the watch. There was a restore options for a few days earlier but that didn't work.

It seems I am limited to what can be done with the watch connected to a PC for a few minutes.

Any ideas on what I can by done? I have an event in a couple of weeks which I would very much like to use this device to track.

  • You say you have tried 'holding light' but for how long?

    Factory reset process is:

Ensure the watch is powered off.
You may need to hold LIGHT for up to 30 seconds to turn the watch off.
Press and hold BACK and START/STOP.
Press LIGHT to power the watch on while holding these two buttons.
After the first beep release START/STOP.
After the second beep release the remaining button.

  • Thanks for quick response. I have tried each of the above for 30+ seconds.

I've just followed the Factory reset process you've provided (with a timer to be sure). I held Back + Start/Stop for 30 seconds and then held Light for another 30 seconds and didn't get any response from the watch on the screen or a beep.

Currently the only thing that produces a response is holding the Start/Stop button on its own

  • With the watch connected to a computer, can you access the file structure?

If you can, it may be possible to delete some files that may be be causing the issue (like configuration files or I've read on the forum some people having issues with map files).

Unfortunately, although I have used Garmin GPS for many, many years, I am new to their watches and wouldn't be comfortable making specific suggestions. (The GPS are actually very similar in terms of file structure, naming of files etc.). However, if you can get this far then either someone else on the forum may be able to make suggestions, although I would suggest you contact Garmin support. I have only had to use them once for a faulty GPS but they weren't bad as far as support services go.

  • Yes, fortunately I can access the file structure in Windows and can see all the folders, so I do have the option to remove files if needed. Hopefully there's something that can be done there in pressing the buttons is a no go for me.

Like you I am not comfortable modifying that myself without guidance (as well as running the risk of voiding my warranty). From what I have read, it seems easy enough to do as it is just making back ups of the folders on the device and then removing them. That said, I won't go tinkering with that myself and will see if anyone can Garmin can guide me instead.

I tried calling the support services today but couldn't get through, I'm based in Australia so guessing they don't have as big a team here. Will try again tomorrow.

Thanks for your help so far my anonymous friend.

  • From what I have read, it seems easy enough to do as it is just making back ups of the folders on the device and then removing them.

The problem with that is if you remove something that then stops the watch from even being accessible via the file system!

It is odd that the watch is accessible via the file system (so is starting up to a significant degree) but you can't do a factory reset. Makes me wonder if it is a stuck button problem. There's plenty of discussion you can search for on the forum about it and how to try and fix it. Just a thought.

Let us know how you get on...

  • FYI for any future readers. I called Garmin Support and sent them the above information and they arranged a replacement straight away. I sent my watch out on afternoon 18th Sept and received the replacement today (25th Sept), so a pretty speedy resolution. Happy with that.

     Thanks "4261461" for your help.

  • Thanks for the update and glad you have the issue resolved.

Just a bummer not to know what the route cause was Pensive

  • Today garmin auto updated my watch software and the screen went black after activity was saved. Pushing buttons activated the screen but the screen seemed like it would be "broken"  like snowfall on the screen pushing buttons changed the snowfall. Then suddenly all looked ok and then after a while  black again and snow fall later...  restarting the watch caused the EPIX start screen to be stuck. Then tried this :

    Factory reset process is:

Ensure the watch is powered off.
You may need to hold LIGHT for up to 30 seconds to turn the watch off.
Press and hold BACK and START/STOP.
Press LIGHT to power the watch on while holding these two buttons.
After the first beep release START/STOP.
After the second beep release the remaining button.

All was good except the second beep never came. Several tries. no 2nd beep. The watch started, start/stop button no longer worked so I could not select anything. For example to  go to System setup to erase the data from the watch. After a restart the touch screen worked and I could select stuff. Using touch screen I could select to erase everything on the watch and restart fresh . Everything else worked except the the start/stop button.

I applied the backup. That  was a mistake. I was back to square one!!

    I did this again:

Ensure the watch is powered off.
You may need to hold LIGHT for up to 30 seconds to turn the watch off.
Press and hold BACK and START/STOP.
Press LIGHT to power the watch on while holding these two buttons.
After the first beep release START/STOP.
After the second beep release the remaining button.

I finally got the  also the second beep.

Now after a restart even the start stop button worked!  (I found many posts  where support had replaced watches due to malfunctioning buttons...

I spent 4 hours on all this. Pretty frustrating as I have been a huge fan of my Fenix and Epix watches. Now I have to worry about upgrades and go through this kind of stuff again?
