Snowboard/Ski activity auto-run bug after updating to 15.74

Yesterday's update (version 15.74) broke the snowboard activity on my Epix Pro, and possibly skiing too.
I live in the Alps and snowboard frequently, there was a definite change in behavior from the previous version to this.
Auto run does not pick up the start of a run anymore, today was the first time running with the new software version and the activity missed my first two runs (zero distance, zero elevation, zero everything), then I realized and managed to somehow make it work by pausing it and resuming it manually at the beginning of each subsequent run (at the top of the lift).
Later, when viewing the activity on the Connect app, the new Run/Lift highlights on the map are completely bogus, some (portions of) runs are highlighted as lifts and viceversa.

There is a changelog entry that mentions changes to the activity ("Added tracking of splits for Ski."), but it may have introduced a bug instead. Have done a soft reset and will try again in the next days.

  • Honestly I want the whole activity (including lifts) counted in my track and elevation data. I've been recording ski tracks since before the era of GPS watches (geez that makes me sound old) - with my first GPSmap60. And there was no way to distinguish between lifts and runs with that.

Then when I upgraded to the Fenix 5X, the ski app never worked so I recorded everything as a 'hike' and got the full distance/elevation. Changing that now to not count the lifts would be a change to my recording methodology and comparisons, so I want the full info.

My scenario is just the opposite to yours - you've always recorded just the runs so don't want the lifts counted as well.

So I agree that having the option to either count or not count the lifts would be gold, and allow everyone their preference.

  • Please refer to the official update seen below the main thread opening post on each page of this thread. Thank you to everyone for taking the time to report the issue so quickly after the software was released.

  • Definitely a bug.  My ski app had me going up a closed lift and down a run on a side of the mountain that was closed.  My last 2 days skiing it has a fraction of the runs that I did actually tracked.

It’s a shame, because I was ripping!  I’ll never know now how fast I was hitting it first day on my new skis.  Sob

  • 4686070 - It looks like your experience on the Epix directly matches what the Beta release was expecting in order to track metrics throughout the activity....

    forums.garmin.com/.../beta-version-15-74---now-available-ota-for-all-models

"This Beta cycle introduces improvements to the Auto Run feature during Ski and Snowboard activities. We will no longer automatically pause during the chairlift portion of your runs, so your metrics will be continuously tracked throughout the entire activity. While you will not notice any differences on your device, your synced Ski/Snowboard activities may display some anomalies in Connect until this feature improvement is rolled out publicly. You may notice differences in your Run count, Elevation, Time, and Distance. Most should be more accurate, however it is likely you will see your Run count double as downhill and lifts will each be counted as individual Runs."

  • Same here. Tha latest 15.74. I started skiing and it logged nothing. It only counted time, but no distance, no laps... I had to turn of the auto run to just record everything including lifts. How to fix this??

Fixed an issue where some ski/snowboard runs were not tracked as expected.
Fixed an issue where ski/snowboard total descent was not reported correctly.

  • thanks for the tip! just got it installed, hoping it works correctly.

  • Missed this.

    Season-start Alpine-skiing yesterday on 15.74 recorded NIL.

Requested update from Epix2 now, and 15.76 is now installed.

Hope it works for alpine-skiing :)

  • Today I went and tried with the new 15.76 update and auto tracking worked, but I had already solved the ski/snowboard activity tracking issues with a soft reset earlier. The problems that remain in terms of features for me:

    1) Connect only shows the distance with lifts in the Overview tab, you should show the distance without lifts too (which is hidden as a total in the Runs tab), or let the user choose which one they prefer. Same with the total time (with lifts or without lifts).

Moderator: We consider this an improvement request for the experience. It has been given directly to the engineer working on the ski profile.

    2) The total descent in the Overview tab and the total descent in the Runs tab still don't match.

Moderator: We were aware of this when the ski app profile changes were made. We have further plans to improve this for everyone.

    3) The time of each run is weird, it definitely is not the time of the run only and includes some portion of the lifts (compared with times taken on the same slopes before 15.74), but the total also does not match the total time (with lifts) in the Overview tab. I'm at a loss here to explain what happens.

Moderator: We see this as a likely remaining software bug that we need to correct.

  • Thank you! I forwarded your experience directly to engineering.

For anyone still experiencing any ski/snowboard activity profile issues using the v15.76 software, please update this thread with details of what you experienced. Thank you!
