Snowboard/Ski activity auto-run bug after updating to 15.74

Yesterday's update (version 15.74) broke the snowboard activity on my Epix Pro, and possibly skiing too.
I live in the Alps and snowboard frequently, there was a definite change in behavior from the previous version to this.
Auto run does not pick up the start of a run anymore, today was the first time running with the new software version and the activity missed my first two runs (zero distance, zero elevation, zero everything), then I realized and managed to somehow make it work by pausing it and resuming it manually at the beginning of each subsequent run (at the top of the lift).
Later, when viewing the activity on the Connect app, the new Run/Lift highlights on the map are completely bogus, some (portions of) runs are highlighted as lifts and viceversa.

There is a changelog entry that mentions changes to the activity ("Added tracking of splits for Ski."), but it may have introduced a bug instead. Have done a soft reset and will try again in the next days.

  • Same issue with Fenix 7 Pro. Not only are the lifts and runs totally messed up or tracking doesn't work at all (which is an apparent bug) but another annoying "improvement" of the 15.74 upgrade is that the lifts are now included in the distance. I've been tracking skiing for a very long time and also track equipment which is now inconsistent with the history. Regardless, can anybody from Garmin explain why the *** shall the lift distance be included in the activity? Sitting on a chairlift or in a cabin, what an activity.. I hope this is also a bug and not a feature and both will be fixed soon.

  • Same issue on the Fenix 7 and tried the soft reset with no success in fixing it. Pretty frustrating "upgrade" to now have elevation gain going up when riding lifts.  Hope this fix, back to something that worked fine in the past comes along quickly.

  • Having the exact same issue on the Forerunner 965. About a month ago auto lap would give me a lap update at a consistent point during every lift and worked very well.

When trying last week I would get random lap updates throughout the day, seemingly every time I stopped moving. The run count was exactly doubled and similarly the app fixed it when the activity was uploaded. Interestingly, strava kept the double run count.

I tried without autolap today because I was tired of hearing random lap updates all over the mountain and got an accurate run count when uploading to the app again, but now my total vertical descent was 0 feet. Also on the watch history it says 1 run. Pretty annoying issue especially when it worked perfectly before.

  • This morning I tried to dive deep into the problem and while I do believe that there are some interesting ideas in the concept of split tracking, I find the overall implementation pretty confusing. In addition some things are completely broken.

    So here my notes:

    1) "Lift lap/split" isn't part of the slope; it appears as a special type of lap: current slope activity screen is not updated during the lift but it's advertised as a lap by alerts/lap counter. Weirdly, if you have a custom activity screen showing current lap distance, you'll see it incrementing during the lift.

    2) "Slope lap/split" starts immediately after leaving the charlift and this is good. Slope distance is ok and it's correctly reported in garmin connect. Unfortunately, total distance and total slopes of the activity take "lifts laps/splits" into account (and this should be considered a bug)

    3) Alerts are almost unusable. They are triggered immediately after a stop or at the beginning of the lift. Lifts are considered part of the slope for the alerts. This means that if it takes 5 minutes to lift and 5 to go downhill, alert will report just one lap of 10 minutes. If in the middle of the slope, you stop at minute 7, 2 alerts will be triggered: the first one after 7 minutes and the other one will be triggered 3 minutes later after the lift starts.

I appreciate lift spits but they shouldn't be used for alerts, distance and lap counting. They should be clearly marked (different label/symbol?) in activity screens and behave consistently in all custom activity screens. In addition it could be make sense to have an alert signalling when you start a slope.

    Just my cents

  • I agree - that's bizarre that anyone would want uphill lift distance to count as either moving time or distance. I guess I'll have to just pause and start the watch manually for each lap (like I do for bike parks).

Perhaps Garmin can just give us the old behaviour back (behind a toggle).

  • I went skiing for the first time yesterday with my new watch (Epix 7X pro 15.74) and used the 'ski' app. I had 'Auto Run' set to OFF as I would like the activity to include distance and elevation on my runs and lifts. At least that was my understanding of how the app worked.

Anyways, the tracklog recorded the full distance and elevation profile of my ski. However, at the end it said I only did 1 run, with 0m total ascent and 0m total descent. That's how it showed up in Garmin Connect and in Strava. But in the elevation graph, it clearly showed that I went up and down a bunch of times.

Annoyed that it didn't register any of my elevation, I downloaded the original file from GConnect to my computer, and re-uploaded it and it then gave me what appears to be the approximate correct ascent and descent. Seemed maybe 20% low, but at least it had something.

I'm not sure if that is a bug, or my use of the ski app. On my old Fenix 5X, the ski app always crashed, so I just used 'hike' and then converted it to ski afterwards in GConnect. Ideally I'd like to use the 'ski' app because then it shows the runs and lifts on the map.

I'm not sure if my problems with the 7x Pro are firmware bugs or my use. I can't find any detailed info on how the app actually works, so any advice or guidance would be appreciated as well. Thanks!

  • Epix Pro - Same issue skiing downhill. It doesnt pick the start of downhill ride. Only solution was to track everything including ascend. Will try soft reset the next time.

  • I ran into the same issue this weekend.  My wife and I are both running v15.74 on our Fenix 7.  She ran into the issue using the Ski activity and I ran into it on Snowboard.

The interesting thing is that mid activity our Live Track was working fine tracking our progress.  However, nothing was recorded.

  • Hello. Instinct 2 here. 14.11

My runs are lifts. My lifts are runs.

    connect.garmin.com/.../13057496664

I noticed that before watch was detecting end of each run then i jump on a lift, now it also announce laps then i stop on a way down. That is fine.

And yes, once I experienced the same. I go down twice and it count 0 distance 0 runs. Had to restart activity.  Something is broken.

  • Last year, I had to use the MTB activity for all my ski touring, because the backcountry ski activity was broken and useless.

Here we are one year later, Garmin is advertising improvements and enhancements in the ski activities, and they are still broken and useless.

Come on Garmin, we need the main activities of the watch to actually work.
