Outdoor Maps+ Not Downloading

I had an Outdoor Maps+ download/layer on my Epix 2 but deleted it because I don't need that area anymore and wanted to download a new area. However, after selecting the new area and plugging in my watch the Outdoor Maps+ download stays at 0% and never changes - even after a couple of hours. I've tried every combination I could think of as as far as rebooting the watch, deleting the area and choosing it again, etc. but it still doesn't download.

Have any of you run into any issues with Outdoor Maps+ downloads where a reboot didn't fix it?

If anyone from Garmin monitors this and has any advice I'm open to that as well because I would really like to be able to use this $49 mapping add-on that I paid for.

  • UPDATE: Not sure why it made a difference, but I downloaded maps for my Current Location and once that was done was able to download maps for a Saved Location.

  • Sadly, this is a common experience. I've encountered it couple times and it has been mentioned in another thread as well: https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/fenix-7-series/323548/outdoor-maps#pifragment-1292=3. Usually, some combination of cancelling the download/downloading different selection/downloading fewer layes or similar seems to fix the issue, but there's one person who mentioned they have no luck with these. I've also had one instance where the download stopped around 50%, but this seems less common. Usually, it either doesn't go past 0% at all, or it works fine.

Outdoor Maps+ are pretty new, so I suppose it's not too surprising, but as you mentioned, it's sold as an extra paid product, so it's little bit disappointing.

  • Same issue on my epix gen 2. It tries to start downloading, but like you never changes from 0% - i left my watch for about 10 hours thinking it may just be incredibly slow - no change from 0%. Maddening…….

  • I had huge issues downloading Satellite and USGS maps yesterday and today. Except this time, my maps would start the download and then stop at some point and get stuck there. It was stuck at random points like 2%, 3%, 17% and today at 100% and the only thing that works is starting over and hoping for the best. I think if you leave it long enough it eventually resets back to 0%, after a few hours, but doesn't recover on its own. I tried monitoring the network traffic in the end but it doesn't seem it's any kind of slow network issue. When it gets stuck, there's just no traffic at all, the watch doesn't even try to download maps and just sits there, showing the download screen but doing nothing.

I was hoping to get better idea what is triggering this before reporting it to Garmin, but I can find no rhyme or reason. Sometimes it downloads 64MB of satellite images in under 10 minutes, at other times, seeming same map doesn't get downloaded at all.

I eventually succeeded today, but it's pretty ridiculous. I am seriously considering trying to request a refund on my subscription from Garmin - maybe that will get attention on this issue. Certainly, if someone here is considering subscribing to Outdoor Maps+ for Fenix 7 or Epix, at this point I would definitely suggest to wait, until Garmin gets it working. It's not a product worth paying for just to do alpha testing for Garmin.

  • I also have a related problem with Outdoor Maps+. I can't even see my subscription after purchasing it yesterday...

I am a newbie in Garmin eco-system, bought their Epix2, and the problems begun. Still waiting to get reply on my email.

  • I'm in the UK and purchased a Maps+ subscription from Garmins UK website. My maps would not progress beyond 0% download, despite trying everything, different Map areas, different WiFi networks,  different WiFi frequency, resetting watch.

On second interaction with Garmin support, they investigated and said maps+ was only rolled out in US and not UK hence why my subscription did not show in garmin connect nor progress beyond 0% download.

     They refunded the subscription.

  • purchased a Maps+ subscription from Garmins UK website

Interesting, as it’s not offered as an option up here in New Zealand Flag nz or at least I can’t find it from a search of the Garmin NZ website. Wonder why it’s even on the UK website when it only mentions the 50 US states in the description.

  • It's still on the UK website in UK pounds and description says "satellite maps across the globe"

  • Ok, seems I missed something, but from https://www.garmin.com/en-GB/p/893561  :

With Outdoor Maps+, you have access to satellite imagery across the globe that is delivered directly to your compatible Garmin device via Wi-Fi® connectivity.

Download photorealistic maps directly to your device, and see a high-resolution perspective from above. Easily find the land features that matter to you, mark waypoints and more.

    • The plan can only be used by one compatible Garmin device but can be transferred to other Garmin devices.
    • A 1-year subscription gives you full access to regularly updated satellite maps across the globe as well as premium map data for all 50 U.S. states.

  • I would assume they might have expanded it, but in US it still says it only supports US.

Either way, this is an unrelated issue with coverage. It gets stuck at 0% in the US, which is covered for sure.
