Epix gen 2 - problems with disconnecting external sensors

Hello all,

I’ve got some connectivity issues with my Epix gen 2, and perhaps you can be of assistance.

So for the past several months (or possibly even more than a year) I have recurring issues with connectivity of external sensors.

It started with my wireless bluetooth earplugs (Jaybird Vista) that I use when running. Multiple times during a run these earplugs are disconnected (on various occasions/timings, no clear frequence or reason noticeable). I have to manually reconnect them again by pressing play on the Spotify playlist again, or through the connect option in the sensors menu.

Similarly I use my Epix for indoor bike rides (Keiser M3i) in my own living room, connected to K2pi sensor (so cadence and speed from the bike are connected to my Garmin/connect).

During a bike ride, on multiple times (10-20 at least) the cadence and speed sensors are disconnected, and automatically reconnect. This creates a significant discrepancy between the actual distance biked (as shown on the Keiser M3i display) and the distance as shown on my Epix bike activity screen. The disconnects are clearly visible in the image below.

Now, you may say it has to do with faulty earplugs or the k2pi sensors, however that is not the case.

When my girlfriend connects with these sensors on her Garmin Forerunner 955 there are never any disconnects, under otherwise identical circumstances.

My Epix gen 2 (and the Forerunner 955) are both running the latest firmware.

Removing and reconnecting the sensors does not resolve the issue.

Thank you kindly for your assistance,

Daan

  • I am sorry there is an issue. The best evidence is the experience difference using your watch vs. the FR955. The headache you have been going through all fits your Epix 2 as having a serious issue. Especially taking into account how long you have had the issues and it is not 1 sensor over another. It's a connectivity issue with both ANT+ and Bluetooth based on the different sensors you are using.

You can try to address it fully resetting your Epix 2. I suspect you will need to warranty replace your watch through Product Support in your region.

How to Reset Default Settings on My Garmin Outdoor Watch

  • Thanks for your reply Chris.

Do you mean a soft reset, or one of the other/harder resets mentioned in the article?

Currently I'm training for a marathon and triathlon so not really keen on losing all my data.

However, the connectivity issues (also occurring with Stryd footpod), are bothersome for a premium watch like the Epix.

I've got the receipt of my watch, purchased on 26-1-2022 (Europe/The Netherlands), would that cover potential repair or replacement?

  • After your Triathlon, fully reset your watch to defaults as a last resort attempt to correct your behavior given the severity of your issues. Due to your overall description and testing the same sensors with a FR 955, you will most likely need to warranty replace your Epix 2.

I am unsure how long your warranty will be in your country since it can vary depending on the country. When you reach out to Product Support in your region, they will know how long the warranty is for the country you live in. I have seen it vary.
