Activity with External Heart Rate Sensor

When I start an activity like "Run", There seems to be no difference on the watch icons whether I am using WHR or an external heart rate sensor.

Is there a way to tell when starting an activity if my external heart rate sensor is connected and active (short of going to Settings / Sensors) ???

  • There is no difference in the data fields. It's just visible in the status bar BEFORE you start a workout. The icon in the datafield is just an icon that you know this field is HR. it's just a label.

  •   OK. Like where ?  I did two tests. Selected my RUN Activity and took a photo and then pressed Start and took a photo. In either case, the heart rate icon is solid and I can't tell. So at what point can I tell if the HRM is connected and active ?

  • In this area before you press start to start the timer. In my picture no HR is connected, If it's connected there will be a heart symbol.

  •   Righto !  OK, just before I press Start, IF my HRM is connected, I see a heart icon replace the "Touch Disabled" message.  When the HRM is not connected, the "Touch Disabled" message disappears and no heart icon appears.

Thanks.  Not very obvious from Garmin. They could have : (A) made the heart icon an outline, (B) made the heart icon a  different color

2022-10-30 - In order to help other people, here are a few photos to make it clear.

    When you start an Activity, this is what show up. When the "Touch Disabled" disappears is where it becomes clear;

With WHR (optical wirst HR), the word "Options" appears and the horizontal line is just below.

With an external heart rate chest strap connected, there is a heart icon below the word "Options", Battery Level or GPS status. This is what tells you that the external heart rate monitor is enabled.

  • All, an official answer from garmin was posted in the below thread. Maybe pick the conversation up there?

  • . Maybe pick the conversation up there?

Why? It's not a bug. It's another feature request clogging up the bug forum. And it's been answered by Garmin...just as it's been answered here.

  • Thank you forum police!

  • My pleasure :-) Always happy to assist.

  • Hello,

has this issue been resolved or does anyone have information that it will be on a future update?

I also think the UI should give an indication on what sensor is being used for heart rate data.

polar does this by using a different color around the value. Maybe something g like this should be used.

  • Totally agree there should be some way of knowing whist on an activity which HR source is being used (without looking on the underside of the watch to see if green lights flashing) Basically to override this I have set my Running activities power mode to Jacket mode to force the wrist based HR sensor off. At least I know. Basically need a trusted sensor and wrist based is not one of them... Coros Arm Optical and HRM Pro ECG are trusted.
