Activity with External Heart Rate Sensor

When I start an activity like "Run", There seems to be no difference on the watch icons whether I am using WHR or an external heart rate sensor.

Is there a way to tell when starting an activity if my external heart rate sensor is connected and active (short of going to Settings / Sensors) ???

  • There will be a solid heart icon below the GPS status indicator after the message that the External Heart Rate is connected.

  • Well, Maybe I'm missing something but I always have a solid heart indicator. I am using the Garmin HRM Pro+ heart rate strap. I know it is working because my watch is over my clothes and cannot see my wrist and if I go into Sensor settings, I see it connected. But I always have a solid heart rate icon when I start the activity...

  • Because your HRM is connected.

  • The difference is small but this is without chest strap(the 2 lines indicate that optical sensor is used).

  • To be exactly it indicates that its broadcasting HR that's also possible with external HR belt. Without broadcast you won't see a heart symbol when using wirst sensor.

  • Oh, thanks for the heads up.

Didn't know the exact meaning and always have it associated with the optical sensor considering that it was the only difference between OHR and chest strap also if it was a bit strange Smiley

  • I see no difference on my Epix 2. It is running the latest firmware, 9.37

The first two photos are with the WHR (optical). The heart icon is solid white.

The next photo is with the Garmin HRM Pro+. Again, solid heart icon. I see no difference. I know it is using the HRM because when I put the strap on, the watch told me that the HRM Pro+ was now connected.

    What am I missing ?

  • It's only shown on your first picture. It is not shown in your data fields. This heart icon in pictures 2-3 is just to mark it as a HR data field.

I don't have the heart symbol in your first picture when no HR belt is connected.

  • With WHR :

Putting the HRM Pro+ on :

    With HRM Pro+ connected :

I feel like this is a TV ad.  I don't see the difference. Do you see the difference ???

  • When I want to check whether my HRM-Pro is really connected, then I simply scroll up to the Running Dynamics screen, and if it is not there, it means the strap is not connected.

You could also customize the main activity screen, adding one of the RD fields there, to avoid the necessity to scroll the screens.

Of course, it will work only with straps supporting RD
