To Stryd Users: Stripping Garmin Power from FIT Files

Dear all,

As some of you noticed, Garmin Power (which is recorded behind the scenes automatically when having paired the HRM PRO via ANT+, for example) overwrites Stryd Power when uploading to GC or some third-party platforms (e.g. Trainingpeaks, Strava, etc.).

One solution would be to pair the HRM PRO via BLT Smart but at the same time one would loose Running Dynamics or HRV data from the HRM PRO.

The following workaround works for me:

* Having paired the HRM PRO via ANT+

* Downloading the original FIT file from GC

* Stripping Power Data from the FIT file by using FIT File Tools (FIT File Tools)

* Uploading the stripped FIT file to whichever platform you use

-> Stripping Power with the above Fit File Tool obviously only affects Garmin Power but not Stryd Power

BR, Christian

  • Is there something special to do for Garmin power? I don't get Garmin power in my running workouts. Using Epix 2, HRM Pro with the 8.8 update, Stryd. Only Stryd power is visible.

  • Michael, you have to be on the Alpha release with your Epix to get native running power. The ConnectIQ Datafield from Gaemin generates the same numbers if you want to start.

Cyberbob, the native power does not overwrite Stryd power. Stryd saves its power as a ConnectIQ data stream in the fit file. This is also marked as ConnectIQ data.
It depends on the Plattform you analyze the data afterwards wich one is shown, but they are always both there.
but your workaround is a nice way to force platforms to use the Stryd data.

    Hi BeneGi,

You are absolutely correct, Garmin Power does NOT overwrite Stryd Power - they simply exist next to each other. The problem is that some platforms consider Garmin Power to be the primary power channel and therefore ignore Stryd Power. By stripping Garmin Power from the FIT File (Fit File Tools obviously also consider Garmin Power to be the primary source) everything works fine.

  • Hi Cyberbob, Thanks for your post. Be trying to figure this out for a while.

Is there a update to this, as in an easier way to not record Garmin power data from HRM pro? Having to do the fit file tool each time seems tedious.

    Thank you!

  • Just disable power recording in your workout settings.

  • Unfortunately it's not that easy.

There are actually two power fields in a FIT file, one is the Native Power field and the other one is a Connect IQ field added by the Stryd Connect IQ app.

PROBLEM 1:   Some applications (e.g. Runalyze) are smart enough to pick whichever field has data if one of the two is missing or empty.    Some applications are not as smart (Strava!!!) and pick the Connect IQ field data only if the Native Power field data is completely missing.

PROBLEM 2:   At the moment if you run with any Garmin accessory that produces Running dynamics (e.g. HRM Pro) then the native power field will be filled anyway, with "Garmin power" values (unrealistically high, btw) if power recording is set to ON and with zeros (!) if power recording is set to OFF.

So there is currently no practical way - apart from manuallly fiddling with FIT tools - to run with both HRM and Stryd and get correct power data in not-so-smart apps.

The actual solution would be either for Garmin to not create the native power field at all if power recording is set to OFF   *OR* for Strava to ignore the native power field when it's filled with zeros.

    Lovely.

  • For me it's that easy. Strava is showing my Stryd Power if I disable Power on the watch. Even that I run with the HRM Pro including with Running Dynamics. Thats why I wrote "just disable power recording".

  • OK, so maybe there is a way! Can you please clarify the instructions to "disable power recording" the way you have done?

What I tried before was to go to Activities & Apps -> Run -> Run settings -> Running Power -> Status -> OFF.

However with this setting and running with Stryd and HRM Pro, Strava does NOT show any power reports.   I do see (Stryd) power in other apps though.
