Screen dimmed automaticly while cycling (Epix on the handlebar)

I think this is not a BUG, but Garmin didn't count with the usage described in the title.

Settings: workout - max brightness and AOD on. Gestures on or off, doesn't matter.

Previously I used all of my Fenixes as a bike computer too, attached to the handlebar (Garmin has 2 kind of mounters for this purpose, so the watch "officially usable" for this).

After 8-15 seconds of no touch (and no gestures), the screen dims and if the sunlight is strong, I can't see anything on the display. If the sky is cloudy then I barely see the datas, but nothing as close as with my previous Fenix6.

Can you suggest something to change this behaviour? I want a bright screen for the whole workout.

  • When activity is on, it seems that 2 min. Outside the activity it is 1 min.

  • I think that for the ones who'd like to use it as a bike computer the only option is try it out and returned if it doesn't work for us

  • Is it possible that it depends on the watchface? I saw posts of other people stating the opposite and some developers stating that display is always on with AOD on, if the watchface respect some requirements(10% pixels of the total ones and pixel shifting to avoid that any pixel is always on for more than 2 minutes).

This is the reason why i need to try it personally because different people are saying different things :D

    Thanks

  • Or motivate Garmin to add a feature during activity for TRUE AOD

  • But during activity the watch face isnt on, its the desired activity screen that is on, or map, etc. Garmin should do the10% pixel or shift what needs to be shifted but I think that during biking, users should have the option for a TRUE AOD

  • I actually believe that there is an issue and I have been able to replicate it.

I have been using my Epix for indoor training for a few weeks now and the display always remained on whilst mounted to the handlebars. Today though, it turned off and needed a button press to turn it back on despite AOD being turned on during activities.

The only thing I did differently today was turn on “Do Not Disturb” as there was somebody on my driveway and I kept getting notifications from my cameras.

On turning off Do Not Disturb, the display remained on for the remainder of my session.

    Bug report submitted.

  • It's not a bug. If the watch doesn't sense micro movements it turns off the screen after 2 minutes (yes, even with aod on, even at the middle of an activity). You need to move the handlebar a little bit to keep the screen awake. And you need to do gestures to make the screen brighten up.

We already reported this to Garmin and the answer is: this is normal, reason is above.

It is a bug, because my handlebars are rocking about big style when I’m cycling and the screen will turn off only when DND is also enabled.. I have been able to replicate this issue multiple times today. I am using a Wahoo Kickr with “action feet” which allow a surprising amount of lateral movement.

The new KICKR AXIS feet enhance the ride feel of the KICKR Smart Trainer by mimicking the side-to-side movement experienced riding outdoors. These feet allow up to 5 degrees of movement and so the KICKR can respond more naturally to the rider tempo and body position changes. The KICKR includes a set of KICKR AXIS feet with three stiffness options to truly tune your ride to your unique riding style.

So, how about you try it and verify instead of claiming categorically that it’s not a bug?

  • I can replicate this with and without the DND mode turned on. I need to manually move the handlebar to prevent. (A Neo2T also moves the bike a bit but it seems that not enough for the watch.)
