Screen dimmed automaticly while cycling (Epix on the handlebar)

I think this is not a BUG, but Garmin didn't count with the usage described in the title.

Settings: workout - max brightness and AOD on. Gestures on or off, doesn't matter.

Previously I used all of my Fenixes as a bike computer too, attached to the handlebar (Garmin has 2 kind of mounters for this purpose, so the watch "officially usable" for this).

After 8-15 seconds of no touch (and no gestures), the screen dims and if the sunlight is strong, I can't see anything on the display. If the sky is cloudy then I barely see the datas, but nothing as close as with my previous Fenix6.

Can you suggest something to change this behaviour? I want a bright screen for the whole workout.

  • @8032019 - never had that issue with the S7 screen during an activity - sure outside of an activity absolutely - but during an an activity never. But then it would only do 10-18hrs max of continuous GPS tracking with AOD on - and was normally around 12-14hrs.

  • They are not advertising it as a multisport watch Smile don't want to be a pain in the.... but it's possible that Epix 2 is not meant for you.

When i bought the Venu 2 i was not expecting all the features from Garmin's top sport watches but i dreamt about it(thanks Epix 2 for becoming reality)...compared to the Venu series, Epix 2 is a bit different and it has everything that Fenix 7 has...still, the display is different and due to that, they work in different ways.

  • From Garmin.com

"Garmin introduces epix, a premium multisport smartwatch featuring vibrant AMOLED display and up to 16 days of battery life"

  • I guess they messed up in the "Newsroom" section and my first part of the previous message was a bit of a joke but since we are here i still confirm what i said before because the video doesn't specify anything about "multisport" and the same goes for the product page(while on the Fenix 7 it's written both on the video and product page).

We can talk about one word but, in my opinion, they are presented in different ways because they are made for a different types of people, when you look at the extreme situations(for example races that require days of battery life with GPS or using the watch as a bike computer or keeping it on the desk as table watch).

I'm not against some extra settings because it will not change anything for me and it would make the watch good also for other situations but i guess that Garmin needs to protect itself in some way(be it the battery duration complaints or burn-ins or whatever...maybe they just want to see how it's going and later on they will change....they are still fairly new with AMOLED watches).

  • I dont have my watch yet (its been ordered) to play with it to determine how much of an issue this will be for me. However, while running the hand is always moving, so does that mean that the screen will stay at its brightest for the duration of the run. My understanding is that it will since there is constant motion. If that is the case Garmin cant be worried about burn in, etc during a run and the same condition should be applicable while biking with the watch on the handlebars.  Again, obviously maps and navigation are a major function of this watch.  Clearly you cant navigate a bike course effectively (without risking crashing) with the watch on your wrist, therefore it must be on the handlebars to support course navigation on the bike.  Again I ask, what good is navigation with a map feature if you cant see the display?  Secondly, not sure about this watch not targeted for multisport, according to DCR, Garmin is most likely or definitely moving in the direction of AMOLED displays and the current Fenix type of display (MIPS) will most likely become a niche market for the extreme ultra, multi day adventure type of clients.  Forgot his exact quote but in all likelihood, the Epix is here to stay and be expended as a multisport watch.

  • While running it is not an issue because as soon as you lift up your arm it will bright up. I am not a runner so I couldn't check but the only problematic part - while running - can be when you constantly look your watch with elevated arm. For example if you run, try to navigate and you (would) look the map for more than 4/8/15 sec, because the screen will also dim. At least you can rebright it with a quick arm movement. For the other part of your post: I think the same. This watch is a multisport watch, the new successor of the Fenix line. (At least Garmin try to position the watch like this.) For me it is a little bit embarrassing that neither the YouTubers nor Garmin spoke about the possible screen issues with the Epix. At a post under DCRM'd revivew somebody mentioned this diming problem, but Ray answered that for him the dimmed screen was enough to read - which can't be true based on my testings.

  • That is my point about running, in response to potential concern over screen burn. Wouldn the watch be almost always fully on during a run? If that is so than burn in can not be an issue and therefore while biking the screen can also be always on.  Not sure though if during a run the screen continuously switches from full on to dim.  Personally I think that when I get my watch I may have to set the touchscreen to on for biking and quickly swipe every time I need to see the screen, which is doable but a pain.  The plus side of doing that i guess is that the battery will last longer.  I will wait and see how it goes when I get it.

  • I'm still waiting my Epix 2 too so i'm just speculating like you. Looking at the other posts i'm guessing that Epix 2 is doing similar to the Venu 2.

When you have the watch on the wrist, the display stays always on(when AOD active of course) but the data and some details change after some seconds, when the watch goes in the "standby" AOD). When you remove the watch from the wrist and the HR sensor stops to work, the display goes completely dark too...and there's no way to turn it on with only movements(i'm keeping the gesture off normally).

When an activity is ongoing, the watch turns on also with the movement but everyone need to test it personally to understand if it's ok or not.

During running(with the watch on the wrist), the watch just change brightness but it stays always on.

  • It also turns off on your wirst if it doesn't recognize any micro movements! (Yes, in AOD too, after 2 minutes.)

  • Isn't it after just 60 seconds?
