Pool swim distance tracking issue

I just got the new Epix Gen 2 watch yesterday and went for a pool swim this morning. I loaded my workout but noticed that none of the intervals had distance detected. Then I stopped that activity and started a new one and same issue. Both activities have correct interval times and HR but no distance, nor stroke detection (it’s enabled for the activity).

I had correctly set pool size before the activity and watch was updated to 7.20 software version.

  • Chris, thanks for looking into this. However, the reference your provided "Using Swim and Rest Intervals" is not helpful, as it addresses accuracy issues, but this is not the point here.

Our issue is that the EPIX 2 does not record swimming exercises AT ALL, ie shows "0" for all related measurements (distance, laps, calories, effort etc). Only the total session time is correct.  Resetting the watch has solved this issue in my case – but for how long?  This malfunction is likely a software bug affecting many users. I hope Garmin treats this with priority and comes up with a software update asap.

  • Same issue here. Losing patience as I lose time every session fixing this.

today nothing would make it work - hard reset or not. Software v.24

  • That is disturbing news. I was already frustrated last time when I lost 25 min of swimming and had to futz with the watch during my limited 50 min swim rsvp. If a restart wont fix it then it becomes a bigger pain in the buttt.  Lets Garmin, give us that beta with the fix.

  • happened again. this time I shut the watch off/ on before starting the swim. swam 2 laps, 0 counted. Held the light button to preform a reset and lap counting worked correctly.

  • Updated May 11th, 2022:

This issue is resolved after updating to software version 8.18.

    - v8.18 Software Release

  • I have an identical issue.  Most of the time the interval tracking works fine.  Currently on 7.24 software, but same issue with the original software which I think was 6.8 or similar.  However when I go into garmin connect>devices>settings>activities & apps >edit settings and adjust the pool swim data screen settings then it seems to trigger the issue where no intervals are recorded. I have tried stroke detection on/off and auto rest on/off with rebooting the watch using the power off after setting changes but no resolution.  Usually I have to reset the activity by using the Restore Defaults and then do a hard reboot of the watch by pressing and holding the top left button for 10 secs or so.  I noticed that sometimes it takes a while to reboot and sometimes it just hangs up and I have to reboot again.  However after a reboot the default works again so now I don't mess with the custom data settings.  Now I check after the first lap to make sure it is recording so I don't lose data.  When I have made changes to the data screens just using the watch alone, this problem with interval detection does not seem to happen.  I never had this issue happen with my fenix 6 with 3-4 swims per week about 2500m/each over about 2 years of use.  Another thing: the data field "temperature" does not give a value when it is set as a data type.  Is it supposed to work in the pool??

  • There might be something going on with the datascreens and doing the setup via Garmin connect on the mobile.  My wife and I both got an Epix 2.  I set up the various activity screens simultaneously via two phones, so it was all done efficiently.  Oddly for mine I can not add graphical and chart fields.  On her phone I can.  On mine I ended up selecting an HR graph on the watch itself, while for her I could do it all via the phone.  She keeps having 0 lap counts, while I have no issues.  I’ve just updated her datascreen from the watch itself, but have not yet tested if it helps.

  • Same happened to me and the watch started to behave erratically after... A factory reset did restore the features, and so far so good since 2 weeks (with a couple of swim sessions each week). Fingers crossed

  • I stopped and restarted the watch for my next swim and the distance was correctly recorded.  However this morning I stopped and restarted the watch about 10 minutes before my swim, but it did not record any distances for my swim (extremely annoying).

The only swim settings I've touched is the pool distance, which was only changed once when I first got the watch.  First few swims worked correctly, 2 of the last 3 swims have not recorded distance.

    Epix Gen2, software version 7.24

  • Same problem here…

I used my new Epix (software version 7.24) for 9 pool swim activities so far until today without problem (average duration per activity 1h, average distance per activity 2km, 50m outdoor swimming pool).

Today though my Epix would not record distance at all. I restarted the activity without luck. Had to use the Drill feature for the rest of the workout to manually enter distance.

Please advise if this is a software issue that is expected to be fixed or a hardware issue in which case I should proceed with returning the watch to be replaced.

Thanks in advance for your continued efforts to resolve this.
